A number of our readers have been wondering when Cingular will be releasing their version of the HTC Wizard, the 8100/8125, and the good news appears to be that it's on its way to a consumer release: one of our readers noticed that Cingular customers who have B2B logins can now order both the camera-enabled 8125 and the cameraless 8100.

Click for full image

What does this mean about an ETA or pricing for average consumers? Not sure, exactly. ;) The website suggests "originally $449", but I don't know if that's the retail price and/or what the discounted price would be with a 2-year contract. But B2B availability is often a sign that general availability is coming soon.

Does the width of the device look right to everyone? I thought this was the "Wizard". The i-mate variation is only 2.283 inches. I'm thinking they missed the first a 2 on their website.

Interesting that on my companies premier site, the phone is cheaper by $55.00 than the Treo 650 and $135.00 cheaper than the iPAQ 6515. Seems they may be trying to push this a little harder than the rest.

I know these are offered on different networks, but has anyone used both the Wizard and it's CDMA cousin the Apache, offered by Sprint (and now Verizon) for any amount of time? I'm curious to see if the processor makes much difference in usability and battery time.

Oh, and BTW, only the 8125 is available to me on my companies site. Guess they want us to have a camera.

They expect the devices to come in within 7 - 10 business days and to sell $349 with contract.

Yeah, that's a typo. The Cingular 8100/8125 (Wizard 100/110) is only supposed to be 1mm wider than the i-mate K-JAM and T-Mobile MDA Vario (Wizard 200).

Where can I find more info on this device? Has anyone used this? Cingular doesn't say too much other than 200 MHz Processor.... that pretty darn slow aint it?
My Axim X3i has a 300 MHz and can run upto 400 MHz. Will I see a lag watching videos and listening to mp3 with the 8125?
The price is right and I'm ready to bit......

Here is a link to the same device, but under a different brand name: http://www.dopodasia.com/Dopod/Singapore/En/Products/PDAPhone/838

The TI OMAP 200MHz CPU isn't bad. It can handle media playback and standard day-to-day operations fine. You may find it to lag a bit under heavy multitasking, but otherwise, it'll do the job okay.

I have the K-Jam and it runs the same 200MHz OMAP processor. I am very pleased with its performance. I don't play action games, so I can't comment on processor intensive actions. The only time the device freezes is when it is switching from landscape to portrait mode. It can get a bit sluggish during that 3-5 second transition.

The TI OMAP850 processor is fairly quick and has a dual-core processor in architecture. The OMAPs DSP does much better at floating point operations than the Intel ARM and does a better job with battery power management. It was a good choice for this small device. More on it here:

The processor is slower than the one found in the XV6700 and PPC-6700 since both run on the CDMA/EVdO broadband service they need the faster 412Mhz Processors to handle the throughput.

The ROM software is a bit different than the other HTC Wizard offerings mostly due to Carrier branding. The hardware is exactly the same underneath, it just has a different casing and buttons(placing the two units side-by-side really shows this off). I personally like the larger keys than the ones found on the K-Jam and MDA-the tactile feel is not as good as the JasJar/HTC Universal, but better in my opinion than the KJAM/Tmobile MDA. I would have liked a Windows key and OK key on the front like the 6700 CDMA/EVdO brothers sport, but it feels very good in the hand and is easily pocketable.

I also like the squarer design, it fits more comfortably in my hands the KJam feels too rounded and feels like it will slip from hands, kinda like the PDA2K does. The camera hardware on the back is a bit different with a larger parbolic mirror located below the LED Flash/blinding light and lens. The pics on the dopod website show this off pretty well.

One cool feature is that it has a lanyard hole on the bottom near the USB2 port instead of the back cover release found on other HTC Wizard units. Great for attaching a USB thumbdrive quick-release lanyard for placing your phone in your front pocket and preventing it from taking a dive on the floor if you bend over. Most people mistake it for a digital camera...

As Ed said the switch from portrait to landscape will takes a few seconds IF you have a lot of Graphic UI programs on your today screen or on your running program. In most apps like calendar, messaging, contacts,GPS programs transition is very quick from portrait to landscape even with clear type turned on. I have only seen lag in the Today screen due to Pocket MSN and phoneAlarm running, take those 2 off the Today screen and you will net improved performance boost.

I have no problem running some larger programs, games, and even the latest version of Skype on it. Runs great as a tethered USB-EDGE modem or wirless 115kbps Bluetooth modem with my laptop and Tablet PC. The MS BT headset sounds much better than WM 2003SE Bitcom stacks with a longer range, I found the quality better than that of the JasJar/HTC Universal.

Its a very sweet device...

The only problem I have seen, (which is in all HTC Wizard devices) is that if a magnet is brought too close to the Hall effect sensor of the keyboard (located in the lower right-hand side of the device near the stylus hole and camera button) you can initiate an unwanted portait to landscape switch... 8O

So now the question... Do I get the Cingular version or spend the extra $ and get the imate or qtek version? I got the cingular version of the blueangle and am very dissapointed with the availability of updates. No patch for the inbox software (so now i cannot use it with work email), no mediaplayer 10..
I think i will probably spend the extra money and go imate or qtek this round. I think it would be worth it for the updates alone.

I'm a proud new owner of the 8125. The design is sleek and I love the side sliding keypad, though sometimes I forget that it's there. Anyways, I've been bashing my head against the wall trying to figure out how to take Pocket MSN off of the Today screen. It's probably right under my nose, but I'm missing it somehow. Any help?

On the K-Jam, you just uncheck the box in Start|Settings|Today.

Huh, well, thanks. Not sure why I couldn't find that. That was like looking for my glasses when they're on the top of my head.
