For when traveling or on the road and looking for an available hotspot, I wonder if anyone has experimented with using their Pocket PC as a WiFi hotspotter (also called a hotspot detector)

As long as a Pocket PC has WiFi capability, it should be able to quickly identify available WiFi networks, their names, signal strengths and encryption types.

And the Pocket PCs do this within seconds of being turned on. That is much better than waiting for a PC to boot up,only to find that there is no WiFi access.

Has anyone seen an application for Pocket PCs that do this? It would substitute for products like this -

Thanks!!

There are a few Pocket PC applications which serve as hotspot detectors. Wi-Fi Graph (http://www.kasuei.com/wifigraph/) is one of those.

You might consider WiFiFoFum and/or Hitchhiker. One of them--I don't remember which--can even take GPS input which I think it uses to triangulate (I never specifically tested the triangulation, I'm just guessing based on the display and based on "that's what I would program if given the chance") ;-)

It's WiFiFoFum that can take the GPS input.

Before you go off on your trip, I would check out www.wifi411.com. There you can find the name and address of area businesses.

i have been using a trick little freeware pair called

today warrior and wifiknife

http://personales.ya.com/beemer/todaywarrior1.htm

text and graphic info as a today screen item

as well as access to a mini window that shows results of a scan

i searched hi and low for this functionality....

was willing to pay whatever to have it accessible from today

the freeware won out

the only con imho is the graphics are a little ppc2002, but its free!

others i looked at were net@board, netbox, and omega one's ip dashboard, all 3 retail, with trial

net@board was a close second, the other two use vga icons that got crammed up because i use ozVGA

my personal search criteria required today screen access

hope this helps
