I've been checking with various suppliers, and none can confirm an ETA for delivery on the Hx4700, and they are all saying this item will probably no longer be available. Unfortunately, there is nothing IMO that equals this device currently (screen size, quality, battery life, CPU speed). HP as it turns out, also has a poor track record with suppliers for availability in general.

Rumour is, HP is planning a Windows Mobile 5.0 version of the hx4700. A bit like what the Axim X51/X51v is to the Axim X50/X50v. I'm not yet sure on the integrity of said rumours, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

They would have to increase the ram to 256 in order to accomodate it, if they did.

Hmm. Prolly take as long as it's taking us to get the upgrade to WM5. :-(

I can't see an upgrade to the existing Hx4700, as WM5 is all on ROM and runs everything in RAM. Different memory model.

No, it's possible and probably will happen. HP has already stated that the Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the hx4700 will be released in Q2, 2006. The upgrade will format the memory to have ROM dedicated to storage, and RAM dedicated to program execution. It will work much the same way as the Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the Dell Axim X50/X50v and the older HP iPAQ hx2000 series (hx2110, hx2410, and hx2750).

Not enough RAM to dedicate to execution, and vice vera, no? I'd think twice about doing the upgrade, as it's not optimal for the device, but that's just my thoughts.

The 64MB RAM / 128MB ROM configuration that the hx4700 has is fine. Most current Windows Mobile 5.0 devices utilise a similar memory model. Of course, how well an upgraded hx4700 performs will depend on how well HP optimises the upgrade.

Indeed sir. I fully agree with you. I was just browsing Aximsite and was really amazed to see the BIG thread of X50V users complaining and whining about the Dell Windows mobile 5 upgrade
I hope HP gets it right

I haven't got an HP yet, 'cause the Hx4700 appears to be no more. Question is: Do I wait for an HP update, or get an Axim X51v??? I'd love an improved Hx4700, but how long would one have to wait??

If you go to HP's website, it says spring 2006

It's referring to a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for existing hx4700s. With regards to a replacement model for the hx4700, we don't even know if it's going to be released, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I wonder if I should just go for the Axim X51v, which is on sale today.
