View Full Version : What is the catch? Axim x51v better and cheaper than iPaqs?

I am doing research in PPCs and noticed that the x51v has everything some iPaqs, like the hx2795 and hx4700, have and more (256 ROM, for example), and yet it seems to be about $50 to $100 cheaper. Any ideas why? It's true that the hx4700 has a fingerprint reader, but is that the only reason?

Thanks,

Rodrigo

Quite simply, Dell has cheaper overhead and can thus afford to undercut HP's prices, just like they do with laptops, PCs and servers. The story gets even more interesting when you know that all these devices are actually contract manufactured by the same company - HTC of Taiwan.

No, the hx47xx does not have a fingerprint reader - the hx27xx does.

Well Dell is actually a cleaver chap.

It main moto is to buitl a goodwill into the minds of people by providing quality at outrageous prices. Yes you are right they provide more features than ipaqs and other pdas at less price

Also as mentioned above, hx4700 doesnt have a finger print reader

HP products are overpriced, plain and simple. The only possible advantage that HP has is presence in brick-and-mortar stores, so one could go to Best Buy and come home with their new toy the same day, instead of having to wait for mail order with Dell.

Personally, I think the $300 (at least!) that I saved over what I would have paid for an iPaq equivalent to my X50v was well worth the (short) wait.

Please also note that there may be quality differences between some Dell Axims and iPAQ's. For example, the screen of the hx4700 is definitely better than that of the x50v/x51v, color rendering quality- and visibility range-wise too.

But it needs to be stated that the x50v/x51v does have an excellent screen.

My x50v is great, but I was extremely mad with their sloppy WM5 upgrade.

BTW, 4700 has a touchpad instead of a regular directional pad. The touchpad is really annoying and you can't play games.

Quality! Magnesium alloy case. Beautiful screen. Yum. If you'd not used a hx, then you'd probably be over the moon with the Dell screen though.

Touch pad is rubbish for games, so if its a games machine you want, the the Dell with it's 3d chip probably is a better chioce (or a PSP!).

For other uses, the touchpad has a cursor mode, which can be extremely useful for me.

The low price of the Dell is very attractive and makes the Dell very good value for money.

So, price and touchpad are the sticky points, I reckon.

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35630 is worth checking out - a lot of comparative screenshots has been linked from there.

I don't know... I actually compared 4700 and x50v directly in a store and the color doesn't appear so "washed out" on x50v. In fact, I think 4700's screen is a little too dark next to x50v. I don't think it's really accurate to compare it on photo, since the camera is more sensitive to light than human eyes.

Just a thought....
