How does this new version compare to the latest version of Resco Recorder? I just read Menneisyys' roundup of audio recorders, but it was for version 2005 1.25 and he found that it had some problems with WM2003+.

Since this is WM5 ready, I wonder if they've worked out these problems?

I own both and have used Sound Explorer for several years and liked it but recently started using Resco and now like it as much. Either is a great recording application, try out both for their individual features and design.

But DO disable the Today plugin for Sound Explorer, its a huge resource hog.

Has anyone put this version up against MortPlayer. I use to use Vito Sound Explorer but since they didn't do a WM5 vesion I started to use MortPlayer and it seems to be better than Vito.

Just now I sent the following email to Vito Technology. The email is self-explanatory. Every word has been preserved except my last name, which I rubbed out in this post. I hope to hear from them soon.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a registered user of SoundExplorer 1.25 (Bentley _______).

I downloaded the trial version of SoundExplorer 1.5, and installed it. I used the same userid and unlock key as in version 1.25, and it registered okay.

But when I changed SoundExplorer's setting from portrait to landscape, my iPaq 2750 immediately did a system reset, and the entire pda cannot restart despite three soft reset attempts. My pda is now locked. I have not done a hard reset, but nothing else seems to work.

What should I do?

Best regards,

Bentley

P.S. When I run SoundExplorer, the About window sometimes says version 1.5, sometimes it says 1.25. But the software looks the same as 1.25; it does not look like the screenshots of version 1.5 shown on your website. On my pda, the only difference I can see is that the Today plug-in no longer has scrolling text.

I have had similar problems and when I switched to a WM5 pda...Axim 51V and installed the program it froze my PDA also and I had to do a hard reset. They said that it was because of the the Today Plugin and it should be disabled. I tried that and it still locked it up when I did a reinstall. I have since switched to MortPlayer that is just as good and now there is a new updte to GSPlayer as well. Both of these are free and install like a charm.

I was the one who experienced a system reset after trying out SoundExplorer 1.5. I am using Windows Mobile 2003 SE on an iPaq hx2750. So far I have not heard from Vito Technology about my inquiry. Anyways, to continue the story, I finally had no choice but to do a hard reset, after three attempts to do a soft reset failed. I am a backup fanatic, so I was able to recover from this setback. (I feel sorry for people who are going to lose their personal data in a similar mishap.) In any case, I wanted to try SoundExplorer 1.5 again. This time, I uninstalled version 1.25, and installed version 1.5. I went to Settings, Skin, and changed from portrait to landscape. Lo and behold, I experienced another system reset.

I'd say that's apples and oranges. Vito (and Resco) has it's focus on recording, while MortPlayer has its focus on "jukebox" functionality. I've even heard from several people who use both. And features like an parametric equalizer or bookmarks are a matter of personal taste and need...

btw: Most old apps work fine with WM5, too. MortPlayer is also a WM2003 SE app, with some tweaks to work around some WM5 bugs (like telling the menu bar is 26 pixels high in VGA :? )...

After all is said and done I think that I am going to stick with MortPlayer. Like you said it is a matter of tastes on certain items and what MortPlayer does "tastes" just fine to me. I was tempted to try the new version of GSPlayer but if this is working then why the change. The only thing is that it is a shame that you pay for something that you have done the research on and then it goes belly up. I think that Vito might be going down a different road and not wanting to put the development effort into this product.

The saga continues. I was the one who experienced the system reset on my iPaq hx2750. Just now I removed the resource-hungry Today plug-in for Vito SoundExplorer 1.5, and the system did a soft reset. In this case, it is possible to blame Windows Mobile 2003 SE rather than SoundExplorer, but I think the blame goes to SoundExplorer because previously I had never experienced a system reset just by removing a Today plug-in. Incidentally, I still have not heard from Vito’s technical support.
