<a href="http://promo.ereader.com/free/">http://promo.ereader.com/free/</a><br /><br /><img src="http://www.ehansberry.com/pages/pocketpc/palmreader.gif" /> I'm not sure if this just started or if it has been going on since December 1. eReader.com is giving away a different free ebook each day. Today's ebook is <b>The Magazine of Fantasy &amp; Science Fiction August 2005</b> which is the latest one in ebook format. Normally these are $3.99. You do have to create an account with them which includes a credit card number. They use that to encode the ebook so you are less likely to share with the world. That is the kind of DRM I like. No activation or rootkit or any other nonsense. :) <br /><br />So, go ahead and add a repeating task to your Pocket PC from now until December 31 to check out what they are releasing each day.

Don't panic, it's only day 2 of the free e-books. There was a romance book yesterday - I didn't pay much more attention than that because it's not my sort of thing, but I downloaded today's!

What? You don't like romances? Will Dick marry Jane? Will Jane tell Dick about her secret affair with Eric? Will Eric tell Jane about his secret affair with Dick?

Sorry, I got caught up there for a moment. ;)

Joe almost marries Jane, but Jack recently finds out that Jane were cheating on with Dick, therefore he tells it to Joe. Joe decides to cancel the wedding. Jane is crying. Still crying. And still crying. Anyways, Eric meets with Donna again, and tells her, that he still loves her. Donna replies that she will marry with Dick anyways, and it is too late. They are both crying. And crying. Still crying. CUT

Whoops, this was a spoiler, wasn't it?

Just a heads-up.... On December 27th, the free ebook will be "Star Trek: Titan - Taking Wing" the first book of the new series about Captain Riker (Commander Riker from Star Trek:TNG.) A really good read for any Trekkies.. :)

I checked the site shortly after midnight MST and saw the offer but when I went to the actual download page, it said that the book was discounted 10% to $4.49. That was strange.

I'm upset that eReader uses cc numbers as DRM (aka Digital Restrictions Madness) and I will certainly NEVER buy from them.

If you loose your PDA or get it stolen... you're toast. You might as well hand out your credit card...

Besides their dictionaries are as expensive as the printed ones which is unacceptable as well. And they REQUIRE you to upgrade to eReader Pro too.

Digital Restrictions Madness and outrageous pricing are the two reasons that have kept ebooks in a niche market.

Ahhhh, classic JLP. Another rant based on an incorrect assumption with no basis in fact.

That isn't how it works. They take your name and CC# when you buy the book and run it through a series of mathematical formulas and come up with a one way hash (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/O/one-way_hash_function.htm). The OWH goes into the book. You can't extract the CC# or name from the OWH, that is why it is called one way.

Then, when you get the ebook, you put your CC# and name into the eReader software. It has the same formulas in it and it genrates a OWH. If it matches, the ebook is opened. If not, then it isn't. You can read more about it here on PPCT (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=162404) or in this .ebook thread on usenet (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.pocketpc.ebooks/browse_thread/thread/f66dab16e65e2bdc/7aa01ed40f0ae3cd?lnk=st&q=%22peter+fry%22+ebook+hash&rnum=1#7aa01ed40f0ae3cd) where Peter Fry, a former programmer at Palm Digital Media/eReader talks about the OWH the software and server uses.

Yes, I saw it late last night and didn't bother posting because 1, it ws so late and wouldn't have mattered and 2, it was some chick book. I swear, it was under the "chick lit" section. So, sorry to all the ladies that wanted a love story. Just wasn't around to post in time. :D

I just wanted to say thanks for keeping this list. Even when you or I miss a day, its interesting to know what the free tiltle was.
I haven't downloaded but a couple of books this time around - but tomorrow is suppose to be a StarTrek book (and just how did Myrddin know that ahead of time, anyways?)
