Just acquired a used h5455 from a friend for free. Unit is dead. Battery will not charge and unit will not turn on when plugged in to AC.

Should it not turn on when plugged in to AC? Or, is dead battery not allowing this? Could there be an internal battery issue?

If external battery is issue, what are suggestions? I have heard that standard battery for this unit is one of the worst ever made for battery life (as little as 100 minutes when in use). Is there an external battery with more mAh?

1. Yes it should turn on when plugged to AC, even with a dead battery - I think. That's what my experience with current PDAs suggests.

2. You can look at this thread for suggestions on external batteries:

However, I wouldn't hold out too much hope that that would help - if it won't run on AC, an external battery pack might not help either.

I would actually suggest considering changing the battery yourself - it's possible. A google search turned up the following links on the first page alone:

I'd also highly recommend Lion Battery - they're the retail arm of Mugen Power, who makes most of the OEM PDA batteries and often sell extended batteries as well. Unfortunately, they appear to be out of stock, but you could ask them if they've got a spare lying around somewhere:
