I've just written a quick review (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=294&more=1)of the new functionality.

And fear of Apple has caused them to remove any AAC support in this version. Since the older AAC plugin doesn't work with this version (just tried, got an error on opening a video with AAC audio) then it seems users have to choose the version they need per the files they have.

Otherwise I like this version so far. Just donated, finally, and that feels good.

This is why I won't upgrade. I have a number of videos with AAC soundtracks that don't play in the newer versions. 0.66 works fine for me and will until ACC support returns.

Strange. 0.66 audio plugins should be compatible with 0.70 version and many people reported sucessfully using "them".
Try unstalling both player and plugin and reinstall.

TCPMP was the best and will still be the best.

It's really bad that MS doesnt focus on mobile version of WMP.
IMO if they make the WMP of win mobile 5 better then they should atleast release a fix or a patch to ours 'old' WMPs better.

Just my $0.50
The TCPMP is really nice..

P.S: Make the interface skinnable

I am looking to add the AAC support that is currently missing in v0.70. Which plugin is the one providing AAC support in v0.66 that I can copy over? I didn't see a separate plugin download for AAC for 0.66 (the last time I saw a separate AAC plugin was with the old BetaPlayer 0.5). I have 0.66 installed now and don't see any reference to AAC in the default installed plugins in the 0.66 directory. Nor do I see it under it's other possible names. Is it part of the MPEG4 plugin support?

Is it really fear of Apple? I'm assuming it's just because one must purchase a license from the underlying patent holders.

This has been discussed before. It would be nice, but unfortunately, it's left up to device manufacturers and carriers to release this WMP update as a ROM upgrade. We saw it in the move from WM2003 to WM2003SE, and we saw it in the move from WM2003SE to WM5 - there are often less upgrades being made available than we would hope for.

It's not just Apple. Several companies helped develop it. Per Apple's website:

AAC was developed by the MPEG group that includes Dolby, Fraunhofer (FhG), AT&T, Sony and Nokia—companies that have also been involved in the development of audio codecs such as MP3 and AC3 (also known as Dolby Digital). The AAC codec in QuickTime builds upon new, state-of-the art signal processing technology from Dolby Laboratories and brings true variable bit rate (VBR) audio encoding to QuickTime.

Actually, with Sony's property rights paranoia, they would be the ones I would be worried about :)

I don't know if this is possible, but does this new version of TCPMP work with Microsoft Voice Command? I would prefer to use TCPMP before WMP 9 on my device (Ipaq 4150) for basically all of my multimedia files.

If not, is this something that is planned for a future release?

In my install of 0.66 there is an acc.plg file in the install folder.

Google "TCPMP aac plugin" and you'll find what you need. It's being hosted on another site.

I could only get it to work for aac files with embedded album art. That works fine - full screen mode works too. However, I couldn't get it to work for mp3 files with embedded album art or via folders of music with folder.jpg file

wu_tang, the link returns a 404 error. Going up a directory also gives a 404 error. The root link returns gibberish. BTW welcome to the forum.

That's odd, it worked fine for me earlier this afternoon, and works again now. In Pocket IE anyway. I get a page full of TCPMP download stuff.

But I understand how one can have problems... earlier I stated that version 0.66 of the AAC plugin didn't work with 0.70. Turned out I was actually trying an even earlier version of the AAC, and had failed to properly name the CAB file sometime last winter. Oh well, mistakes get made. I can say now that it seems to work, with the one AAC file I have to test.

Tried again just now with both firefox and IE - could be my office firewall, I'll try again later at home. Thanks Gerard for checking for me.

What problem with the hx4700 are you referring to? I've used TCPMP v.0.66 on my hx4705 for many months without any problems. Are you possibly referring to the problem playing wmv files with Betaplayer/TCPMP after WMP10 was installed with the hx4700's ROM update? If so that was fixed in v.0.66.

If you ust the Betaplayer AAC Plugin from rarewares (http://www.rarewares.org/aac.html) alnog with the latest TCPMP version you'll be able to play those songs and get the other improvements that TCPMP has made over Betaplayer.

No need to go as far back as the BetaPlayer AAC plugin. The v0.66 AAC TCPMP plugin is available, more or less, and works great.

Neuros is engaging in dialogue with the TCPMP developer(s) in hopes of finding a legal, un-complicated way of allowing distribution of the AAC plugin.
