Hmm, I think you left out the link to the cited news article.

I'm no fan of Sony's memory card formats either, but hey, at least it's compatible with CF Type II.

should have had a poll:

What do you think when sony introduces a new memory card format?

1) I hate it when sony introduces a new memory card format.

2) I REALLY hate it when sony introduces a new memory card format.

Sony reminds me of a cartoon villain who in every episode tries some new and pathetically doomed way to rule the world. How many years now have they been releasing proprietary this and that. Seriously, how many years?

Is this another mini HDD? or flash? And anyone know what the power usage is like?

Ok, so now Sony wants to enter a "standards" market with this CV or Compact Vault.....

I guess this is ok for people out there that are stuck on the name brand of Sony, and I assume they are also thinking about their LCD and Plasma based TVs that have a multi-slot built in.

<-- Are there any built-in DRM???

If not, I don't have a problem with this device (surprisingly) if it is a true Compact Flash based/compatible memory card.

This product does NOT look like another format!!

It looks like a standard CompactFlash HDD (look at all the bolts).

If it did require an adaptor it would be smaller to accomodate this adapter and still fit the closed CF slot found in the relevant digicams.

I'm very puzzled about this: different memory format?? adaptor needed??

It looks otherwise to me. Compact Vault seems a trademark name not a format.

By the way a few months back Sony did release a card called Microdrive, reportedly a rebranded Hitachi MD.

a quick Google yields:
http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Compactvault/

something that looks very official and clearly states the CV is a CF+ type II card, so no adapter needed and NO NEW FORMAT EITHER!! (for once!!)

Amen 8)

Me thinks it might be a MD of their own, not really sure either.

But Seagate I think, announced a couple of month back that they are to release an 8GB MD soon!!

So - in essence this story boils down to: 'Sony release 5GB Microdrive and call it Compact Vault'. No new memory format. Nothing proprietary about it at all.

Am I missing something here? As it stands it looks pretty much this is one occasion when Sony *hasn't* gone its own way...!?

So Sony release a CFII type card when manufacturers are leaving out the slots .....

Im sure this will cost twice as much as the Seagate MD.. Sony's pricing is really out of touch in the market.

Indeed it is. The posts above jlp's show an incredible lack of objectivity and analysis. Do you all really get your little kicks from slamming big companies in forums?

when manufacturers are leaving out the slots .....

This format is still alive and well in cameras, as well I still make this a major buying point in any watchful eye on my next PPC purchase. (mainly because I use a camera that also uses this format).

I think the fact that its being left out of models needs to be addressed on a manufacturer basis.

This misunderstanding all started because the article author on "Trusted" Review is besides his shoes as we say in French (à côté de ses pompes. Pompes is slang for soulier).

I wrote him about the the errors in his article and he answered:
<<Slight misunderstanding on your side I think. By another format I am talking about the fact that Sony has chosen to call a CF product by a totally unnecessary new format name.

The adaptor is also for those WITHOUT a CompactFlash slot, as I clearly
state :) >>

Misunderstanding on my part?? really?! He's the one who says in the title "ANOTHER Sony Memory Format" and repeats it in the article.

NOWHERE does he says it's a new format name just "ANOTHER Sony Memory Format" AND as Sony clearly states it on their site: the CompactVault is a "CF+ Type II card" and "CompactVault is Sony Brand's CompactFlash Type II hard disk drive"

Tho I gave him the direct link to the CompactVault page (http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Compactvault/) he stubbornly stands on his position.

Just like this adaptor thing, he confuses card reader and adaptor. Sony clearly aims this card for use in their top of the line digicams, most of which include a CF slot (besides their own MemorySH!T slot) and these don't need an adaptor either.

And obviously enough if for example your laptop doesn't have a CF card reader you're gonna have to get one .

"It is wiser to admit a mistake that upsets than defend it by a fib that sets" (tell me if I adapted it correctly, if it sounds right; it's from the French: Mieux vaut admettre une erreur qui dérange que de la défendre par un mensonge qui arrange.)

PS: I'm NOT French and DON'T dislike English people at all as some might think 8).

CF is still the card of choice in the high end camera market.

I read wrong....I had to have read wrong. This can't be happening. No way. No way. Game over man. Game over! Sony actually supports a standard?!?!

Apparently so. But they then have to muddy the water, almost to pretend they aren't. Live and learn. :)

If you were reading the posts  you'd learn that a while ago already Sony DID release another CF+ card, a reportedly rebadged Hitachi HDD that they called Microdrive...(that explains this or vice-versa :D )

LOL! This is EXACTLY how I feel about the subject. And have felt since Betamax.

'Cept I think if you're going to be a supervillain, you have to have a superhero that you're trying to defeat...

Sony is like a supervillain looking for a superhero to fight... And no one's interested (except Nintendo, who's just a different type of supervillain).

Well, when I was reading up on it, that was not the way it looked. Have a look at Gizmodo's take on it (http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/sonys-new-proprietary-memory-scheme-compact-vault-134217.php)

You got to be kidding me Sony. According to my count, this is the sixth Sony Memory Stick version released: Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Memory Stick Pro M2, UMD, and now the Compact Vault. This isn’t completely proprietary. It’s just kind of silly. The Compact Vault is a variant of CompactFlash Type II, so in a way they are simply upgrading, but there is probably no chance in hell that it will be compatible with older CompactFlash devices.

The thing is, Sony have a LOT of previous history of doing that sort of thing. No smoke without fire..... (Usually)

I've had my 4GB Kingston Elite CF memory card for around a year or so... been happy with it.

I wonder how the power draw compares to the CF HDD's and what impact the CF HDD's will have on battery life of the PDA...

Anyone have a CF hdd in their PDA? For me, if it has moving parts, it better have 20GB+ in there otherwise I'll stick with my solid state storage.
