This package uses ActiveSync 4.0 to update the device. Be sure to dock your device first before running NETCFSetupv2.msi. If your device is not docked, ActiveSync will store the CAB file until the time when you dock your device. Those not using ActiveSync can run the CAB files which match the device found in the install folder directly on the device."</i><br /><br />Now that <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,44061">Visual Studio 2005 has hit RTM</a>, go grab yourself a copy of the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9655156b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55&DisplayLang=en">.NET Compact Framework 2.0</a>. Contrary to popular belief, v2.0 was never included in Windows Mobile 5.0, so if you're looking to update your device with the new framework, you will need to download this redistributable and apply it to your device. It is compatible with devices running Windows Mobile 2003 / 2003 Second Edition / 5.0. While on the topic of the .NET Framework, you can also grab the v2.0 release for your PC here: <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&DisplayLang=en">x86</a>; <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=53c2548b-bec7-4ab4-8cbe-33e07cfc83a7&DisplayLang=en">IA64</a>; <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b44a0000-acf8-4fa1-affb-40e78d788b00&DisplayLang=en">x64</a>.

I don't want to seem like I'm being difficult, but what is the advantage of installing the .net 2.0 compact framework if you don't have an application that requires it. Older apps will still run on the old 1.x framework, and there really aren't any 2.0 apps around yet. Wouldn't this install just eat up more memory?

What I would really like to know is what new features are in the 2.0 framework (such as ink support, or more powerful controls) that will make richer applications for Windows Mobile. Does it run applications faster? Are there any major developers planning a release based on it?

For one, there are managed wrappers for DirectX Mobile (MD3DM), so you may see .NET 3D apps appear.
