OK, having got my new Axim x51v up and running and now owning a PPC with integrated WiFi one question occured to me this afternoon, which I hope someone here will shed light on.

My access point is my own wifi enabled router, so most of my WiFi use is actually within my house.

Is it possible on my PPC to see my network neighbourhood and access shared drives on my home network?

Just thought I'd ask

Resco File Explorer has this functionality. :)
I can't give exact directions of how to do it off my head (am at work so can't get PPC out) but I'm sure others will tell you how.

I don't know of any ways to do it without. :?

In File Explorer, tap Open, and you can input the UNC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Naming_Convention) path to your network share. CoyboyNinjaPirate is correct that Resco File Explorer can do a lot more, but if all you need to do is occasionally copy files from shared drives, File Explorer may be enough.

Like many things the basic functionality is there, i.e. being able to get to a network share by typing \\MyComputer\MyShare from the built in File Explorer. With that you can only copy to or from the share.

The added functionality of things like Resco include being able to see a tree of available shares and actually open files resident on the share. Note that means you can open Word docs and edit them while they remain on the shared location. You can also open mp3s or wmvs and they will play in Media Player, but this is not streaming and is subject to more issues than actually having a streaming server to manage the throughput and buffering. Generally works OK on a home network though becuase your network typically isn't too congested.

Thanks for the replies. That has got me going.

BTW, does anyone know of a product which allows you to create an encrypted container on your SD drive to store confidential information?

I have something like this for my laptop in which I keep sensitive documents I would not to be found if my laptop was stolen etc.

Cheers

If I understand correctly,
there are volume encrypters. I don't know if that is the "container"

And since you want network explorer and might buy resco...it does encryption too.

IMO.
Resco Explorer is the most useful 3rd party app I've come across for the Pocket PC... the only thing that comes close is SPB Pocket Plus (and the weather/diary in their own lil tabs). :)
