Rumor Of The Day: Exchange SP2 Release Imminent?

We've received a few rumors that Microsoft may be planning to release Exchange 2003 SP2 as early as tomorrow. SP2, for those of you who don't know, adds in task synchronization with the server during ActiveSync, as well as push email. The push email implementation is designed to maintain a constant link with the server so that as new email arrives, it's pushed to the device. This is what made Blackberry famous, and now it appears that the Pocket PC Platform will support this same capability very shortly!

Email features in SP2 will only work on WM5 devices from my understanding.

I had thought that SP2 should be backwards compatible with WM2003SE in terms of basic email features... just not push email.

No. I don't think Sp2 does anything new for Wm2003 and earlier devices. Same functionality.

So instead of sending a kick-sms message to implement push (as wireless activesync) does currently in Exchange 2003, there will be a constant connection to the server? Or will it be using an ip-push instead of an sms-push?

Task sync is a great addition, I wonder when they plan to add note sync.

HTTP connection. WHen you get a new email, the server will basically send an HTTP refresh command that will trigger the sync. Total TCP/IP eliminating the need for SMS reliance, which could fail or be delayed for any number of reasons, especially when travelling off network.

I'm definately interested to see how well this works, but now that I've used Good Technologies solution, I find it very hard to beat.
