They've got some photos of the Qtek 8300, 8310, 9000 and the 9100. The Qtek 9000 is the HTC Universal - coming soon from on several networks. However the one I'm really keen on is the Qtek 9100, which should be out as the Orange SPV M600 / M3000 amongst other names. Although all of these handsets are fantastic, I'm keeping my eye on the Qtek 9100 - which has the form factor (small enough to use as a "normal phone" but still a Pocket PC Phone) and the sideways-slide-out keyboard. This could be one hot-selling handset."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20051003-Qtek9xxx.jpg" /><br /><br />NewMobile.nl has a wealthy collection of <a href="http://www.newmobile.nl/Image_Viewer.php?Toem_nr=10182">Qtek 9000 (HTC Universal)</a> and <a href="http://www.newmobile.nl/Image_Viewer.php?Toem_nr=9432">9100 (HTC Wizard)</a> pictures that are worth checking out. Be warned: once you work your way through the entire gallery, you'll feel pressured into buying one...or two. ;)

Ooooh, the 9100 is a sleek looking device. Looks to be about the same size (closed) as my Treo 650, nice. One handed operation looks to be pretty simple in the closed mode, but I wonder if it's very one-handable with the keyboard slid out?

Who is going to have this in the US? Anyone know?

I kind of wish my Apache device looked that cool. It seems to be almost an identical form factor (minus the antenna)... but it's a sleeker case.

Oh well, I still much prefer Sprint and CDMA/EVDO to the GSM offerings.

I'd be surprised if anyone was dexterous enough to be able to hold and operate the 9100 in open keyboard mode with only one hand. I'm not sure why anyone would want to try - too much risk of fumbling and dropping it - unless you are lucky enough to have 10 fingers on one hand!

Now I know why the Universal seems so familiar.
It reminds me of my old Psion Revo!

The 9100 is right at the top of my shopping list, and when my existing phone contract ends next month, it'll be mine!

The Universal just fails in too many areas for me as a main PPC, and is too big to be a phone first. Ah well.

Now that was a form factor, eh? If only the screen wasn't b&amp;w and unlighted, the battery issue didn't cause the device to malfunction, and the OS wasn't psion...would have been a dream machine!

I just dropped the cash on a Universal. I couldn't wait. I hope it is worth it.

There is a thread at Howard Forums posted by palmsolo where he talks a bit about onehanded operation. He is a Treo user at the moment and is comparing the Wizard he has to the Treo, particularly in onehanded operation. Check the thread out, it may help you. Also he is going to be posting a review of the Wizard on Geek.com in the next day or two. That I'm sure will be very helpful.

Where to buy the Wizard in North America?

Darn right. I have my old one here right in front of me - it went right round the works with me in 1999. A great machine in it's day. I too hope that the Universal lives up to be as good as the Revo was in it's day.

So between the k-jam and the qtek which should i get? I know there is alot of support/rom updates through club imate. Some people hate it some love it, but i've not heard anything about qtek. Can i expect updates from then when HTC releases them?
I know imate puts alot of crap (ie. skype and such) on their devices so the qtek looks a bit cleaner. I know i can remove most of the stuff from the k-jam.

I'm just looking for thoughts.

Thanks! :)

Is it just too early to buy an HTC Universal, or will everyone expect US$1000-$1200 ? It is a very impressive device (if its size doesn't bother you), but for that price/size it should include GPS too (and EDGE and quad-band).

Hey Jason,

I think I'm on my fifth HTC Phone Edition device now. In that time I have noticed a few things about support. For the last generation or two Qtek have very consistently been first out with ROM updates. Problem is that they don't have much of an online presence. To at least get a link to the ROMs from Qtek you need to keep an eye on xda-developers.com. There is always a link posted there very quick. Warranty support for now has to go through the seller, until it is confirmed that Qtek will use the HTC shop in the USA.

iMate, at least have a splashy site where you can download ROMs....very slowly. 8kbps slow. Their online supoort is a complete joke. There are some pretty weird and funny stories about their online unsupport. iMate products can be sent to HTC USA for repair. Apparently this process has improved considerably. The K-JAM will not be supported by HTC USA till after January, until then it has to go through the seller, and sent overseas.

I don't know if that helps you at all?

Dave

thanks! that helps a lot. especially the qtek info. :D
I think i'd much rather have the qtek because the seem to have been tweaked the least from the original htc build. i know it's strange but in this case i think i would rather have less "value added" software. ;)

Actually you're not alone. I've seen a lot of people now picking Qtek over imate because of less bloat installed. Now that Qtek are selling into the North American market I think you will see much more of it. As well the Qtek is CHEAPER than the imate. David Weiniger is going to have stock of the Qtek in a couple ow weeks, and is able to sell it 75 bucks cheaper than the K-JAM.

Good luck...I'm STILL patiently waiting for my K-JAM. It missed the Fedex plane to NJ lastnight, so it won't leave for Canada till at least tomorrow. There are 130 of us watching the progress (for lack of a better word) of the shipment. :)

Ohh i can hardly wait either! I would love to hear some first hand user feedback on this device. How much ram/rom are free, how the processor handles, if i can touch it... 8O oh wait.... :worried:

Check this thread posted by palmsolo. He has been playing with a preproduction Qtek for a few days now, and has been posting his thoughts. He will have a review up on Geek.com in a few days.

One of the biggest worries about the Wizard was the processor, as you mentioned, Jason. He seems quit happy with it. Everyone wondered whether it had the guts to handle Skype. Once he loaded the latest beta of Skype we were able to have a very good conversation using it. On my end I had a 2-3 second delay, but the sound quality was excellent. No background noise, or echo. I'm willing to bet that the version included in the K-JAM works even better.

As well it seems to handle full screen video pretty well. I get the impression that you aren't going to be able to leave many applications open at one time....anyway check out the link for a little better info.

Darius

My day, which I have a feeling is the same for the other 129 people, is to get up in the morning check on the Fedex status, then plan our day around that info. Do I stay home....do I get what I can get done today so I'll be home tomorrow...do I plant myself in front of my computer clicking on the Fedex status page....what a hoot! :) It's fun actually. I just hope it's not anticlimactic.
