Quake Mobile takes all of the action, levels, weapons, and bad guys from the original PC title and transforms it all into the fastest, smoothest and most intense game ever to reach the Pocket PC. It's even 3D accelerated, meaning you get the best possible graphics that kill any other Pocket PC title on the market, PERIOD!"</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/qmobile.JPG" /><br /><br />Ah, it's happened to us all. We've been quietly working away with our PPC, checking email, browsing the web, and then the thought hits us: "I should be killing some virtual thing right now!". Well, now we can finally scratch the itch with Quake Mobile. The screenshots look gory enough, the manufacturer offers original levels with enough single player action to keep anyone amused, and a promise of future abilities to multi-player over WiFi or Bluetooth. If you're ready to start the death and distruction now, you can purchase the game for $24.99 at Handango.

You know, I'm thinking of getting the Dell, simply because of all the games and graphics stuff that ONLY seem to run on it. I wonder why it seems that NO other PPC is in the same league??

I am beginning to wonder if I am psychotic or something. Seems like I am in some tiny minority who has absolutely no interest in hunting down killing coloured pixels ...

Ahh I remember the old days of taking the source release for an old game and porting it to a Pocket PC for FREE! Doom, and even other ports of quake. I just hope that some of that $25 is going to the original creator of Quake, cause Im sure there are restrictions on selling his code.

Should have done it for free or not at all. Its all about grabbing as much cash as you can these days and not about the love of the platform.

I occasionally play a bit of Pocket Quake on my X50v.

Do I really need to shell out for a commercial re-release?

Sure, 3D acceleration is sweet, but i'm not even gonna consider it without a demo :/

Yeah I played Quake years ago on my Audiovox Maestro, for free...

Dan East's port ran fine on my iPAQ 3835. I'd never tried the game on a PC, so it was quite entertaining (terrifying too, at moments). Can't see myself doing it again though. Once through shareware Doom on my Casio EG-800 was enough Doom. Same for once through Quake.

The free port of quake has had a home on all of my Pocket PCs (alhough I never played it much on my Toshibe e755, because of the sloppy d-pad) and still fire it up every now and then.

Not sure if I will buy this version, although the graphics do look nicer. The possibility of future multi-player is interesting, but then PPC equiped Quake players may be fairly thin on the ground.

home of Pocket Quake, and Pocket Quake II (including source code):

http://quake.pocketmatrix.com/

Hasnt been updated since 2002 I think but it runs on all (ARM?) PPC's.
The graphics are standard quake (not as nice). No network. You will need to get the data files off your quake CD or DL the demo.

This new release seems to have nicer graphics and custom levels... im sure they "looked" at the source for Pocket Quake...

Unless they received a license from ID they are reqired to release their source.

As soon as ID's lawyers find out things will change for this comercial release (it will prob. go away).

I think ID has even put out a PR about doing mobile games themselves in the future so they will sick their lawyers to frag this release if they dont post the source code..

I'm pretty sure they are not allowed to sell this. Basically, the quake engine is no longer licensed, but open source. Quake has already been ported to the PPC, without acceleration. However the source code remains the same, and a company should not be able to profit from this.

That's only an issue if this company has modified the source. Being licensed under the GPL (as the Q1 engine is) does not forbid commercial sales of the product. What it does forbid is binary-only redistribution if the source has been modified. It's perfectly acceptable to take source, package it and charge money or to take source, modify it, release the modified source for free and charge for the package.

Now, if we have reason to believe they've modified the source and are not making it publicly available, then there's an issue worth contacting them over.

(Also, IIRC, the GPL only refers to the engine, not the game files itself, which would remain the property of Id and may only be redistributed with permission...?)

This IS ID software. See:
http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/article.jsp?article_id=4613&amp;cat_id=585

Unless they plan on suing themselves I don't think you'll see any litigation here.

X50V only? *sob*

There is nowhere that states this is only running on a Dell. Nowhere. It does say that it uses accelerated graphics, but so could the original Quake, and it had a non-acceleration mode. I'm sure you can expect the same with this.

It won the 2005 E3 1st place for mobile gaming, and in their review they said they did multiplayer and loved it:

http://www.pulsemobilegames.com/Best_in_Show_E3.html

With those beautiful VGA graphics you can be sure it will be the second software I buy when I get my VGA PPC phone edition (just as soon as Verizon carries one). The first app I'll buy will be a VGA capable GPS program.

No, but it does require Open GL ES, which the Axim has and I am not sure if any other Pocket PCs do.
