Almost a year after the introduction of the world's smallest WinXP computer, OQO just introduced an enhanced device (named Model 01+) and dropped prices on the first model (Model 01) to $1'499.

Awesome news for all those who need or want something much more powerful and capable than a PocketPC, but with approximately the same size.

Also two of the most interesting accessories available are the VGA adaptor and the hard metal case, such protecting the whole device, especially the screen.

Here's the press release:

------------------------------------
OQO introduces the model 01+

The model 01+ is the much anticipated update to the world’s smallest
fully functional Windows XP computer.

With upgraded specs, new features and additional accessories all
packed in the same 14 ounce pocketable design that made the model 01
the smallest and most mobile Windows XP computer on the market, the
model 01+ offers even more PC functionality everywhere you go.

Upgrades include:
512 MB RAM
30GB HD

In the office

supports standard PC peripherals.

On the road
Small enough to carry in a pocket, the OQO model 01+ provides
continuous access to all your applications and data.

Anywhere
Integrated WiFi provides web browsing and email access from any
wireless hotspot. With integrated Bluetooth, you can connect to a
Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone for wide-area wireless access.

Prepare yourselves for a plethora of technological advances. Historically, almost without exception, by the time I purchase anything electronic, it almost instantly becomes obsolete.

In fact it's obsolete the moment it goes into production

Actually, I'd argue to say it's already obsolete pre-production.

Anyway, we should be posting on this new OQO shortly.

I just don't get it. WinXP on a tiny screen with only 800 x 480 resolution makes absolutely no sense. Neither the OS, nor most useful programs that run on said OS, work well that small and that low res without a great deal of frustration. Meanwhile the spec as a laptop is low, the price is sky high - and it is just too heavy to be useful as a PDA (nearly 400g...!).

Have to pretty much agree with most of what Duncan has to say - on top of which I find the OQO just too damn chunky and unattractive for my liking.

Still there is something very seductive about the thought of a full desktop OS scaled down to something that will fit into your pocket. If I had the cash I think the approach I like is that is demonstrated in the thread HERE (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34336&start=0) - now, for me, the U70 beats the OQO hands down as one seriously sexy piece of equipment!
