I can't believe Sprint was the first to get it out of all the US carriers! 8O
Cingular, please stop flaunting your iTunes phone and black Razr and release something worthwhile for a change...

I prefer the look of the Wizard, but the Apache seems like a better devices! I think the Wizard only has a 300 Mhz processor, doesn't it?

It is too bad about the antenna, but maybe that will make the EV-DO speeds max out.

I like!

Sprint doing the apache.
T=mobile doing the wizard.

Come on Cingular, pull your finger out and let us kow about the wizard!

The Wizard (GSM variation) may be using a TI OMAP processor which, while it has a lower MHz rating, may be a better performer overall. We'll have to wait to know for sure. I'm also concerned that the Wizard may have 802.11g and BT 2.0 while the PPC-6700 may be just 802.11b and BT 1.2. Again, we don't really know for sure yet.

I'm still skeptical that I'll be able to use this as easily without the stylus as I can with my Treo 650, but I think I like enough of what I see that I'm going to get me one of 'em.

anyone know off-hand...

Is the BT going to be crippled in any way (such as not supporting DUN)

Also, what are the available data plans?

Need to see more pictures. But from the specs and what I can of the device.. I like it. I don't really care for sprint (they're pricey), though they do have better coverage in my area. I also like having the traditional buttons on the front of the device so I can use more it like a PPC when not using it as a phone.

The more I think about it... if the center D-pad button were an analog control, this would make for an awesome portable gaming platform. With phone service and WiFi, it would be much better than a PSP having unlimited online gaming potential.

As a Sprint customer, I'm very much liking this! Although, I'd prefer a CDMA version of the HTC Universal, this one looks pretty nice.

I wonder if Sprint will have the rumored Treo 670 and how the two would compare...

How can a current sprint customer get a resonable price on one of these?

From Sprint's news release (full text here: http://www2.sprint.com/mr/news_dtl.do?id=8280):

"With embedded Bluetooth Wireless Technology, the PPC-6700 automatically connects with Bluetooth headsets and car kits (sold separately). Dial-up networking capabilities for use with Bluetooth-enabled laptops and desktop computers will be enabled with a future software release."

Slightly OT, but haven't seen a more appropriate thread for it:

WM5 devices are definetely starting to apprear in the hands of consumers. Doesn't WM5 *require* ActiveSync 4? If so, shouldn't we be seeing ActiveSync 4 availible for download any day now?

Yes, Windows Mobile 5 requires ActiveSync 4.0 which will be on the CD.

AS 4.0 was made avalible around MEDC in May. Ive been running it since then.

I've been a sprint customer for over 7 years.

I'm switching to Verizon.

Sprint keeps making one critical mistake: they don't give customers the option of buying SmartPhone/PDA devices without the camera! I (like many corporate professionals) can't have a camera at work. Verizon typically offers both versions of its' devices. Not to mention that Verizon prices its' devices at about 40% less than Sprint.

Bye bye Sprint, hello Verizon!

Thanks for replying pdagal and stevelam. I know it will be on the CD included with WM5 devices. I should of clarified why I was aking: I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that ActiveSync will have benefits for even non-WM5 users too (performance, features, reliability, security, etc. etc.). If I'm wrong about that, forget I asked  If that IS a reasonable assumption however, the question still stands.....when will ActiveSync 4 be availible for non-WM5 device owners and non-MEDC conference goers?

Newsboy, early reports indicate that people buying this phone were asked whether they wanted it with or without a camera.

That's wonderful, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still ~$600 after the existing subscriber discount, versus $310 for the XV6600 from Verizon (we get a corporate discount). Add that to the fact that the same service plan is $10-15 a month cheaper, and Sprint has lost my business.

The day a 200MHz OMAP outpaces a 416MHz XScale is the day I will have that often delayed gender change operation.

Its never gona happen.

It's actually already been made available as a developer preview download (http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/4/5/c45f8f83-6383-43d7-840b-cb9638484e4d/setup.exe) which you can search for through MSDN. As far as a public release is concerned, I can only imagine it being not too far away. I can't give you an ETA though.

Not really. I've been playing with the release version for a couple of days, and I can honestly say that I've seen absolutely no benefit to upgrading other than the ability to sync a WM5 device.

What about Synching? Is there real category filtering now?

Well, I do hope Verizon carries the 6700. However, the pricing for their data may force me to move over to Sprint once my contract is up.

Besides, a friend of mine might be able to get me the 6700 for half price as well. It's a win-win.

Rumor has it being called the VX6700 and it is due before yearend.

Stay tuned...

chances are an existing verizon account wont be able to get a sweet deal. If you arent in contract, why not just switch to sprint and take advantage of a $150 rebate off the device. As it is $650 is WAY too much for the device.

I can tell you there is absolutely NO category filtering available within the version of AS shipped with the JasJar. Not only did MS kill wireless sync, they also decided that consumers aren't bright enough to figure out sync options as your choices now are severly limited. There are no options available for any choices in the contacts, notes or tasks applications - for the calendar you can select how many past weeks appointments to sync, but nothing else.

This is progress... :drinking:

Not so quick...check with your employer to see if they have a discount plan agreement with Verizon. Mine gets us 15% off phones and 30% off accessories. In addition, we get replacement phones for "new customer" prices (plus the extra 15% on top of that), with no requirement that we sign or extend our contract.

I'm just saving up the money to make the switch to Verizon. It'll cost me about $500 (including the phone and Sprint penalty), but that'll pay for itself in cost savings in the first 6 months alone.

More than likely it will actually be called the XV6700, as the follow-up to the Audiovox/UTStarcom XV6600. I e-mailed Verizon, and although I didn't expect a straight answer, they said that "if/when" they release phones with WM 5.0 they will announce, but they didn't want to make empty promises for something that may not be released.

Then again, that was probably some CSR in India throwing out random garbage. Like they won't release phones with 5.0. That would be like Dell saying, "You know what, we're gonna stick with XP. Forget Vista."

I seriously hope you're right about a late '05 6700 release, just in time for my new every 2 $100 discount. On a side note, I wouldn't care if Sprint was charging $1 for this phone, and offering $5 per month unlimited Voice/Data. I still would never write a contract with them. In fact, I've started driving different ways around town just so I don't have to pass their stores(hahaha)!

Oh, and apparently the USB cable included with the PPC-6700 also has the text "AUD XV6700" on it. Just another clue as to the potential that this phone will be released on the Verizon network sometime in the future.

Then again, it might not mean anything. Thoughts?

I had a chance to play with the PPC-6700/VX6700 last week at a Verizon show. Great little device. Now I have to decide if I want to wait until Q1 (from the rep at the show) to get it or get the I730 now.
