"If you still use IRC"

Gee Darius, you make it sound like IRC's heyday is passed, that most of it's channels aren't filled with interesting conversation but with immature nonsense, and that respectable people have no time for chat rooms. Come to think of it, you might be right... Of course, www.bash.org is always good for a few laughs, especially the Top 100.

Hmm... time for a one-on-one test against PocketIRC 1.1 (http://www.pocketirc.com/) :)

Guess I'm sticking with PocketIRC, I need my file transfer function.

Heh. :) While I won't deny that it's still used, it seems more people are now using it as a medium for file sharing rather than chat. Where there is chat though, bash.org is always a great place to visit. 8)

That's right - when I started to IRC, back in 1993 (mostly on #finland and #europe (IRCNet), later on #java (IRCNet and EFNet)), IRC was far more lively. Now? It's dead. As is #pocketpc (on EFNet).

So, if IRC is dead, then what has replaced it?

It's not really dead. If anything, I'd say it's used less than before. More people have jumped on to other mediums for chat - e.g. MSN, ICQ, AIM, Y!, Jabber, etc.

I still find IRC a great place to chat for community type chat...as DCC is useless to me, this could be better option than Pocket IRC which doesn't support any of the standard / commands.

Apparently the writer of that program finds them difficult to use

Is it?

I still use IRC a LOT (several hours a day)... prefer it any day over MSN, ICQ, GT, and all those... IRC is great! And it uses very little bandwith, so f.ex. if you are away on a trip, you can stay in touch with friends for a very low cost.

It's not dead. As Darius has pointed out, it's just used less. Now, there're a lot of other, even better mediums to use to communicate.

Back in 1993, Usenet (and even e-mail!) was very slow and there were no message boards so I (and a lot of other people) preferred IRC to communicate to other means. The community channels I was active on (#finland, #europe, #42 etc) were much more lively back then than now. There may be exceptions, though.

DCC file transfers are socket-based and not stream-based and, therefore, require a bit more work to implement. I'll investigate the possibility of writing a DCC client/server for the PPC, though (I've only written 'plain' IRC clients in Java - haven't implemented DCC as yet), when I have some time.

Oh, no! That wasn't directed at you...that was directed at the writer of Pocket IRC. You can't use commands like /me and /join with that one which is extremely frustrating when typing with a keyboard. When I asked him about it, he said it was easier to do it his way.

I like your program, I'll be buying it :)

Yeah, I can imagine DCC would be a tough nut to crack on windows CE. What programming language are you using?
