<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=119353' target='_blank'>http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=119353</a><br /><br /></div>Expansys is listing (for preorder, and heavily marked up as are all their preorders) the HTC Universal under the i-mate brand, which is an unofficial confirmation that they will indeed be selling the Universal. This is great for countries where the carriers won't be selling the unit for some time. However, the naming is kind of curious.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20050824-iMateJASJAR.jpg" /><br /><br />What exactly is JASJAR, and how do you pronounce it? (Admittedly, i-mate's branding of the HTC Magician -- the i-mate JAM -- didn't have much meaning, but at least it was catchy.) My officemates immediately seized on the similarity to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jar_Jar">Jar Jar</a>. 8O That's not exactly what I want to think about every time I pull this unit out of a pocket...

So it wasn't just me that had the same thought.

I knew that i-mate were preparing a branded version of the Universal, but the JASJAR name I was unaware of. Then again, if you look at other i-mate device names (e.g. JAM, PDA2, PDA2K, etc.), the JASJAR ain't all that different. Whack a bunch of letters/numbers in there, and behold, a new model is born.

If they at least called it something with a U in it, it would have been acceptible but JASJAR doesn't sound attractive at all. Could it be that the perfect device is on its way and the reseller is gonna mess up the ultimate clmashell device by giving it a wacky name?? If its not the developer of the product that gives clamshells a bad name, its the reseller.

JAmericanIt would only be perfect for the U.S. if you deleted UMTS and added the fourth band and EDGE.

If you've heard Windows Mobile 5.0's new sound scheme, you'll come to realise that what you said is no joke. 8)

That's what JASJAR's about? :| I really, really thought it was a starwars theme thing. :devilboy:

Anyway, couldn't they have put a CF slot on this puppy?

It is hard to believe that no one in marketing wrote a memo or an email, hell, a post it note saying that was a stupid name.

As I understand iMate is a Middle Eastern company.

They unfortunately seem clueless here as to what that might mean or sound like in some languages 8O

Reminds me of the Toyota MR2, in french MR2 phonetically sounds like what translates to "Hey $#!thead" 8O

I think that i-mate is being replaced by Qtek in the US and that i-mate's name choice was to service the middle east (their core market) instead of the U.S. where Qtek will replace them.

Just a theory.

i-mate is actually very huge in the Asian-Pacific region. Australia was one of i-mate's first target markets, and with O2, they happen to be the major vendors here selling the HTC range of products.

How do you think "ipaq" sounds in other languages?

"Jasjar" is just a form of Jasher, a Hebrew word meaning "upright." This makes plenty of sense, but if you prefer, think of it as the Book of Jasher, a lost book of the Bible.

I am glad this device has a name that sounds more natural in the language of its creators. We're fortunate they didn't choose to call it "hajasjar," which would be more difficult to pronounce in the west.

No, its a company (aka Carrier Devices) started by a former BT guy (Australian I think) with HQ in Dubai, UAE (Middle East). The HQ moved from Europe to Dubai few years back.
I was at the exhibition (Gitex) where imate launched its JAM, the sales person told me JAM is also the initials of the founder &amp; CEO  (Jim Morrison .. second name might be the A) ..

and i do not know what JASJAR is.. sounds vague .. If anything its not part of my arabic vocab. (my as in me and not to be implied collectively to the language  )

I think that is just a silly name. They should have called it something like the "imate Extreme" or something. What is JasJar????

Looking at it on the Aus Expansys site, they have it for preorder for almost AU$2000 8O 8O 8O

In related news: The new i-mate JAM (Wizard) will be called the i-mate K-JAM.

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=125518

Jam is another word for Jelly.

K-JAM = K-JELLY = K-Y-JELLY

That's what I thought of when I saw the name.

hi
the K in K-jam is for keyboard..like pda 2K (where k was for keyboard)
these imate people seriously lack any innovative thinking when it comes to naming devices... i bet if they ever release a laptop and desktop they would just call the desktop as laptop-K (because it has a seperate keyboard )

:)

Word. They should have kept true to their own naming convention and went with JAM2K.

Probably no worse than it does in English. It has a logical root though. There was (and unfortunately still is) a penchant for prefacing technology that has any internet ties at all (or not) with i-something. Since the PPC was a product of Com-paq, i-paq was inevitable.

You have just ruined the Universal for me, thus I will no longer be getting one.

Thank you very much, Mr. Janak!

;)

P.S. Dave W had emailed us a little while back to take pre-orders for the QTEK-branded Wizard he's supposed to get soon. But I'm literally out of $$$ since I had ordered the ThinkPad X41 Tablet (nearly $3K with accessories, after discounts) and the Dell Dimension XPS Gen 5 desktop (topped out at over $3K even after discounts)!

And sadly I've had my extra 128MB JAM just sitting unused on my desk the past few months since I've been too lazy to upgrade the ROM and reinstall/reconfigure all the apps. Heck my PDA2k had suffered battery loss a couple of weeks back and I've still yet to reinstall any apps on it, so it's running plain vanilla out of the box. It's sad, I wish I'm not such a procrastinator (and that there are more hours in the day).

I tell myself I'll wait until I get the new desktop and laptop, then I will sit down and upgrade to the latest ROM of both PDA2k and JAM and reinstall the latest version of all my PPC apps, one by one. But by then the Universal and Wizard will be here and my PDA Phones will be old news. If only the ThinkPad X41 Tablet will get here, it's been backordered for months due to the huuge demand...

Well jlp, i did contact iMate and came to know that it is a BRITISH company BUT based in UAE.

Anyways, the name doesnt sound that bad to me, after all, whats the use if u have a really good named device where it cant perform anything, so what matters is what it has inside, and the Universal has alot to offer.

At least this is MY point of view.
