Last year, Palm (then pa1mOne) executives didn't deny rumors of a Windows Mobile powered Treo now that the split between the hardware company and operating system company (PalmSource) had happened. There are more rumors here and here. Now that PalmSource has pretty much killed PalmOS until it brings out a Linux version by 2008, it makes a lot of sense that Palm would be looking at other platforms to keep their line fresh, a fact that they discussed on their conference call last year..

(Click for larger image)

Specifications list Windows Mobile 5, 256MB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio and a 2MB camera with flash.

Now come on... I like a good rumor as well as the next guy, and I still think Palm at least has someone internally messing with Windows Mobile 5 on a Treo, but this is a mock up from the word go. With the new persistent storage model, no one needs 256MB of RAM. 256MB of storage ROM perhaps. And I seriously doubt anyone is considering making a device with 7 wireless technologies (GPS, GSM, GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth, IR and FM Radio) in it.

Plus, this is just too soon after the new orange logo was released. Looks like an opportunistic photoshop. What do you think, real, or fake?

Probably fake but - 7 wireless technologies is not at all unlikely. There is a smartphone coming with GPRS/GSM, IR, WiFi, BT and FM. As such an advanced smartphone with GPS too is not entirely unlikely.

Actually - the least likely spec is surely 320x320 res. Isn't the PPC stuck with 240x or 480x in square screens?

Just some fanboy's dream. But I believe Palm really is working on a Windows Mobile Treo.

It's already been determined on HowardForums.com that the image is definitely a fake and a Photoshop job.

The Palm logo is off angle and not clear.
The device is listed with 256MB RAM, which is inappropriate for a Windows Mobile 5.0 device that is pushing for Persistent Storage.
Bluetooth is spelled wrong.
Battery life would not accomodate Wi-Fi, GPS, and an FM radio too well.
The shadow of the removed antenna is still visible.
The screen is downright dirty for a promotional model.
The soft keys are still consistent with a Palm device, and there is no Windows key.

Not to mention that the originator of the image has purportedly admitted it's a fake he conjured up.

Yes, THIS image is a fake and not worth publishing as news item. So are specs - also fake.

However I know for sure that some employees of Orange UK have Treo prototypes powered by Windows Mobile and they are evaluating it. So "Treo powered Windows Mobile" is out there as prototype. Whether it will be released and sold commercialy depends on operators.

Why are you printing this now?

The person who posted it already admited to photoshop'in it and stated he wished it existed.

That new Palm logo makes it for me. I would pay $700 for anything with a round orange Palm logo. Maybe more. Can't wait. Why would I buy an Orange, or SMT model that has 90% of that right now for $300 when I can wait until Palm fulfils expectations and delivers this?
Yipee! Can't wait.

Did they give an arrival date? Which telos will be selling it? Yeah!

It would be irony indeed if Palm came out with a WM5 phone and it ended up being the most widely sold WM5 device.

and in addition , you see in the information , 256K LCD Color ! so funny . everybody with very few information knows that LCD color CANNOT BE 256K color . maybe he/she means 262K color ? Ha?

Not really - the strength of the Pcoket PC platform (and, indeed, of the MS domination of the PDA market) is the OS. Palm would just be yet another hardware provider.

This is very likely. The Treo650 has very solid hardware - including good keyboard and 320x320 display. So it is enough to add built-in Wi-Fi and WM5 to it and you would get absolute killer.

The problem is that Palm is reluctant to release it without having orders from mobile phone operators... so it may be delayed and delayed... for ever...
