Hi there,

So I finally got fed up with my HP and will be returning it. The hanging/freezing episodes were driving me insane, which is quite an accomplishment considering I'm on my psychiatry rotation in med school. :D

I enjoyed my brief time with VGA PPCs, though, and would like to try another device. Here's a question - yes, I've read the comparisons and the reviews ad nauseum, but I was wondering if anyone has owned/test-driven both an x50v and a Loox and could give a real-world, front-line comparison? For example, I noticed that the spb benchmarks seem to give x50v an advantage in terms of accessing SD cards (an important feature for me) - does anyone actually notice a subjective difference? That sort of thing. Of course the Loox screen is awesome and the device comes with a lot of features. Surur, I'm particularly thinking of you on this one .... 8)

Regards,

JG

Not ever owning an Axim I cant really comment. Having a device with 128MB ram will remove one cause of hangs, the out of memory type. Also I believe the Loox has less custom drivers etc running at start-up, which would make for a more stable device.

Re: X50 vs. 720 What are the differences in your opinion?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I broke my LOOX's screen over the holidays, and bought an Axim x50v to replace it. I was really disappointed when I first received the Axim and saw the screen. The LOOX screen is so rich and deep, while the Axim's screen is like an overexposed photo. And when the screen is rotated, it becomes very hard to look at through some LCD weirdness -- completely defeating half the point of WM2003SE.

In some ways, the Axim feels more solid, but after field-testing it for the last month in everyday use, it's not as friendly a device to use. The differences are subtle -- little things like buttons that are difficult to press (and there are less of them than on the LOOX, plus the LOOX allows a second shortcut through press-and-hold). The graphics chip made no difference to my use of the device, after trying out the two supplied, unappealling 3D games and looking at some 3D demonstration files. The 100MHz of extra processor power made no difference in performance at all.

On the first day I had the Axim, the Built-In Storage partitioned disappeared because of a memory fault, and now I'm trapped in Dell's interminable customer service loop, having placed about a dozen calls that were either routed to Ireland or India. I'm not sure which accent is harder to understand!

My insurance company, though, came through, and has covered the cost of repairing the LOOX. I should get it back in a day or two, and I'm glad. As soon as the replacement Axim comes, I'm eBaying it.

Most people with Axim's are delighted by the value for money, while most people with Loox 720's are just delighted by a wonderful device.

Hey Surur,

Thanks so much for the advice and links; you always come through. I'll let you know how it goes. As you can understand I'm sure, my PPC device should ideally be both pretty and fast. Pretty for those late nights on call (especially internal medicine) and fast to access all of those notes and articles on my SD card. On a student budget (and one in debt to the banks) the Loox may be out, but then again, what's another K on top of many, many, awful Ks for tuition?

Psych is a lot of fun, very rewarding and intellectually stimulating. I have an excellent team and supervisor. I can say this objectively as I am most likely applying for an internal medicine residency. Then again, my psych supervisor is working hard to recruit me ... If you want to talk more off-site, let me know. Now I must dash - psychopharmacology seminar in 10 minutes.

My friend just bought a loox 720. It is more portable, got mega pixel camera. The dell is bigger than it. As aforementioned Loox's screen is indeed better than dell x50.

Regarding screen quality, you can really see what you are paying for.

For example, I noticed that the spb benchmarks seem to give x50v an advantage in terms of accessing SD cards (an important feature for me) - does anyone actually notice a subjective difference?

Those benchmarks are made with the original, v70x F-S devices. The v71x ROM offers much better SD access speeds.

As far as the 'which of the two' question is concerned:

- if you need a PDA with great 3D capabilities (games), great video playing capabilities and a great, unmatched VGA output and is considerably cheaper outside Europe than the Pocket Loox, get the x50v.

- if you want an all-in-one PDA with goodies like USB host, CIR, jog dial, 128M RAM, great battery life even any extended battery (unlike with the x50v) and a great screen, get the PL720.

So, it's all about whether you prefer a PDA with 3D/VGA output capabilities or not.
