Namco, in conjunction with Larry Banks (a.k.a. BitBank) of HanaHo Games, has entered the Windows Mobile gaming market with official ports for Galaga, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Pac-Man, and Mappy. Galaga and Galaxian, in particular, are games that I've been pining to have on my PocketPC device for years. Now inevitably, someone is going to mention that Pac-Man was released by Microsoft for free. If you're a Pac-Man fan, you'll have to decide for yourself whether you'd rather pay for an updated version or get by on a 5-year-old port. Unfortunately, unlike their offerings for the Gameboy Advance and other platforms, Namco is selling each game separately (instead of bundled) at $14.95 each. You can trial and/or purchase each of them at PocketGear: Galaga, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Mappy. BTW, the trial on these is terrible... only like a minute of game play and it forces you to quit.

They also seem priced a bit too high... You can get the bundle of all of these games, plus a whole lot more for the XBOX for $20. (And aren't we supposed to be reimbursing MS for their subsidy of the XBOX console when we buy XBOX games?)

Galaga, my all time favorite arcade game! Spent many an hour in the Student Union/Commons playing that! :D

It's difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison on the price for a console game vs a PPC game. IMO, these are great games to play while you're on the go and away from home, which obviously you can't do with a console.

I bought Galaga - it seems like it will be great, but I can't register it - for some reason the program's registration page is faulty. I emailed both pocketgear and namco on Thursday night and still haven't heard back - but my credit cards been debited!

I agree the price seems pretty high for ports of old games. The developers didn't have to design these from the bottom up. They simply needed to make the ip work in the proper framework. I would pay 19.95 for the whole bundle, but at 14.95 each they've priced themselves out of the market.

Sorry, but that price is just crazy. $4.95/game would be worth it, and $20 for them all.

That sounds more like it. Or even $25 for all would be fine.

As a software developer, I sell a product starting at $25 that has 97,000 lines of code that has taken 5 years to develop, and am doing just fine. I would think they could lower the price some.

This may be true... but $75 or all five is WAY too much. It doesn't matter if you can play them on the go... the collection isn't worth THAT much more. I'd say half of that, maybe.

Where can I find that free Microsoft version of Pac-Man? Will it work on a PocketPC 2003 model like the iPaq 4150? Thanks.

I agree the prices are way too much.

Yup, the original Ms. Pacman and Pacman (as well as Dig Dug) put out by MS at the launch of the Pocket PC still work with the current OS version...no problems.

I still use them. :)

You can't. They were given away as promos. They are still copyrighted, and are illegal to redistribute.

Don't pay for this stuff! Get PocketNester from here...

http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/pocketnester.shtml

Then do a search for NES ROMs. I've got Galaga, Galaxian, Defender, Millipede, Pacman...etc.........

All free and work fine!

Keep in mind that downloading ROM's of programs you don't own is not legal. Some would say it's illegal even if you own the program in question, but that discussion is best served in a different forum.

Just because you can find a program, ROM, etc as a download on the internet, doesn't mean you have a legal right to use it.
