Looking for a little help here, a while back I broke my file association for .bmp (I think I was trying to associate them with Pocket Painter, which didn't work), and now I'm trying to fix that. It appears that the PPC associates bitmaps image files with Pocket Internet Explorer (which does a terrible job with them), but when I use Resco File Explorer to associate them back to PIE and then try and open a .bmp file, my PPC gets stuck while appearing to open the regular file explorer program. A soft reset is required at this point.

I've tried hard resets, and after that it will properly restore the file assocation to PIE, but I'm wondering if there's a known fix so I don't have to rebuild my customizations from a pretty old restore point. When trying to change the file association I'm using the iexplorer.exe found in the windows directory. Is this the wrong one?

This is all on a Dell Axim high, PPC OS 2003SE.

Thanks

Galt, are you trying to change it back to the default program?

If so, grab a hold of a registry editor (PHM Registry Editor (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/) is a good one), and navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmpimage\

Now from there, to restore your default icon, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmpimage\DefaultIcon and change the Default key data to browsres.dll,-6705

Next, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\bmpimage\Shell\Open\Command and change the Default key data to iexplore.exe file:%1

It's far from a quick fix, but it ensures that the BMP file association reverts back to default values.

Thanks for the help Darius, I used Resco's registry editor (my first reg edit, w00t!), and set those values as instructed (triple checked), but it didn't seem to change the file association. In the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT directory there are also folders for ".bmp" and "bmpfile", is it possible I need to make changes to those?

*Edit* - I went ahead and changed the values for bmpfile/shell/open/comand from "\Windows\iexplore.exe %1" to "iexplore.exe file:%1" and now it opens those files w/PIE!

Thanks Darius!!
