do you think it would be possible that the PPC can be turned into a "usb card reader," wherein you could just connect the it to a computer, and it would invoke the "USB Mass Storage Driver"?

however, if there is already a means to do that - can anyone tell me how...

thanks!!!

Unfortunately, unlike all Palm OS models (the T5 has this built-in; on all other Palm devices, however, you can run the third-party CardExport app that does this), PPC is not able to do this.

On alternative solutions, you may want to read http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15799

if that were the case - would it be included in the ROM updates...?

or, as expected, do we need to wait for the new hardware?

Its not a feature thats being talked about much, and maybe it depends on an OEM to implement it, but in this review http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/articles/wm2005-magneto-en.shtml they mention it in passing:

The operating system is based on the kernel Windows Compact Edition (WinCE) version 5.1. It differs from its predecessor in Direct3D Mobile (initially optimized for Wireless MMX), Windows Error Reporting, the possibility to work as a USB storage without drivers, improved support of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and so on.

Also note that this magneto device specifically talks about having the USB mass storage feature, for filling up its 3Gb hard drive.

Surur, i am not sure that we are talking about the sama thing. If i understood correctly, ipaq_wannabe wants to plug the device itself to a USB port of any desktop computer and want to use the pda just like a memory stick.
What you are telling is that next version of windows mobile will gain USB host capability. Thats right, in fact windows CE 4 kernel has USB capability built in. We cant use that feature (except toshiba e750) because OEM do not implement the feature.
Then again if i am wrong, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Kowalski, you are misunderstanding. We are talking about the same thing (the "drive-mode" thing like in recent palms)

To be accessed as a storage device by a host PC, a WM device will only need the USB client functionality they all have now. The WM OS needs the ability to respond to the host without an ActiveSync connection.

Fortunately, now that CardExort for PPC is out (please read http://www.winmobiletech.com/062005CardExport on this), the above is no longer the case.
