So far, the news appears to be somewhat decent with the word on the street being the following:

• Pocket LOOX 400 Series: No Windows Mobile 5 upgrades for existing devices are planned at this stage. The latest upgrade available is the recently-released Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition ROM update. New Pocket LOOX 400 series Pocket PCs will begin shipping at the end of November 2005. It is uncertain whether these new devices will have Windows Mobile 5 or not.
• Pocket LOOX 700 Series: A Windows Mobile 5 upgrade will be made available from the end of July 2005 to April 2006. New Pocket LOOX 700 series Pocket PCs with Windows Mobile 5 will begin shipping at the end of August 2005.

We will keep you updated as soon as an official press release is announced.

Just to add to that, the new Loox 4xx PocketPCs will come with WM5, and first indications are that the WM5 upgrade for the 7xx series will be free. :)

Well, not necessarily free. 400's are getting WM5, but only new ones. So you are shelling out money if you want WM5 on a 400. There's no evidence that the same won't be true for the 700's - though obviously at a lot cheaper price than buying a new 400 :) Here's a good question. Was the Windows 2003 SE upgrade free to 400 users? If it was, then there's a decent chance that WM5 will be free for 700 users. If not, then there's no reason to believe Fujitsu will change that pattern with the WM5/700.

Well this is copied from an email from FSC support

"Yes, Fujitsu-Siemens will offer a 2005 upgrade. It will be downloadable
from our website. Planned for 07/05 until 04/06.
http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads_1.html"

Since FSC don't have any method of selling direct from their download site, and the non-free WM2003SE upgrade was instead available from pocketloox-choice.com instead of FSC's own download section... there's a reasonable chance that it will be a free upgrade.

No guarantee of course, but there's currently more evidence for a free upgrade than there is for a paid one.

I would like to chime in here and say that whether or not the LOOX 720 gets 2005, it is still the BEST PPC I HAVE EVER USED!!! I returned an iPAQ 4700 after playing with the LOOX for 15 minutes.

it is too bad that loox has smaller rom size than 4700.
if FS updates the system to be able to use some part of the ram as ramdisk, than there is no problem.

or you could even use a storage card to store your files and programs!! Amazing!! No hacking required by FSC?

SururNah I doubt it. If they intended for you to do that, they would have put something like SD or CF slots in there... :)

More seriously I prefer using SD to filestore for apps and stuff since it's generally faster anyway. Still it will be nice to if we're still able to use RAM as storage too since it's orders of magnitude faster than ROM/SD/CF.
