Yes, it's May 9. Okay, it's not exactly a public holiday, so why on earth am I getting so worked up? Today's the day when the Microsoft Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference (otherwise, favourably known as MEDC) gets underway at the world famous gamble grove, Las Vegas! As you would have found out from a post made by Jason a few days ago, our very own Peter Foot will be there to give us instant updates on what's hot and what's not. It's also his duty to ensure he eats our fair share of MEDC finger food. On a more serious note, Peter can't be in ten places at the one time, so if you've got some hot MEDC news that you think every geek on this planet should know about, please feel free to let us know by submitting that information through the Pocket PC Thoughts contact page.

News sources are hinting at the unveiling of the next version of Windows Mobile, so we may see some cool technologies on display. Maybe a few new devices? Little green aliens? Who knows? As MEDC runs from May 9 to May 12, we'll endeavour to keep you posted on all the latest news throughout the week. If you're interested, you can visit the official MEDC 2005 website here. There is also an official MEDC 2005 Podcast which you can subscribe to here.

Well, maybe not every geek needs to know this, just maybe the geeks that that use their PPC's in barcode endeavors.

CAMBRIDGE, MA, U.S.A. SYWARE, Inc., announced it will exhibit at the Microsoft Mobile and Embedded DevCon Show (MEDC 2005) to display interoperability between the company’s Visual CE mobile database software and Socket Communications’ CompactFlash RFID Reader Card. SYWARE rapidly mobilizes information between the enterprise and the field and rapidly converts paper-based or PC processes into mobile applications, without programming, that can be deployed on any Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Windows CE device. Socket’s RFID Reader Card allows users to add RFID capabilities for Pocket PC applications. Socket’s RFID Reader Card product reads and writes to all ISO 15693 and many proprietary 13.56Mhz RFID tags being used or deployed for asset tracking, access control, process control, healthcare, medical, pharmaceutical and other applications.

I'm appalled. On the front page post, the section "version of Windows Mobile, so we may" has a green highlight on "Windows Mobile" indicating some elucidating content to be accessed. The pop-up indicates "Switch to Tablet PCs, Go Mobile". Sheesh. :?

Is anyone planning on watching the Keynote speach on their PPC? If so I'd like to know how you set it up. Will WMP stream it? Does anyone know what the URL is?

Are you referring to Bill Gates' Keynote? If so, the URL won't be made available until the speech goes live, so keep your eyes on this page (http://www.microsoft.com/events/executives/billgates.mspx) for more information. From there, you can select an appropriate bitrate, and it should open up in Windows Media Mobile as a live stream.

I don't recall these sorts of things being webcast live. There are archives of older speeches available at the link in the post though, and I expect this will be up at some point.

Was the CES keynote live? I don't remember actually. Maybe this MEDC one isn't either. At any rate, it should appear in that link as you said.

Pretty sure it's always been set for 10th (Tomorrow). Today is the pre-conference day, registration is open and there are pre-conference sessions but the conference itself is 10th-12th. You'll be able to catch the webcast live here:-

How can something be so exciting and boring at the same time? I guess if I was a programmer I would be more engaged.

Thanks fot the steady updates, steve. It's handy for us who don't have time to listen to the speech while at work, but can check in every few minutes to see an update.

Hooray for WM 5.0! Now with less characters to type
