VGA Questions

I have seen the screen on the Toshiba in VGA mode and the type is really small. I now own a hx4705 and the type seems to be normal size. So, is there a setting to enable VGA or is it always in VGA mode? Or do I have to download a VGA hack?

Well there is a program that allows VGA PPC owners to change the "resolution" on their screen to that of a QVGA PPC, therefore doubling the view size and shrinking the text/images. Real_VGA and SE_VGA are two programs that do this. VGA means to have a 640x480 screen, the only difference between this and QVGA is the higher quality of the screen. It is very hard to explain what the programs do, basically they make them show the same quality image as a QVGA PPC, but on a VGA device with twice the space.

How about - when set to VGA you have the full 640x480 pixels available for text and images ... essentially 4x the 'space' that you have with the standard 320x240 QVGA (quarter VGA) screen.

By default VGA PPCs are delivered set to QVGA so the looks larger than it would when set to VGA.

The text size is customisable anyway, whichever screen setting you use, so don't wory about text size, you can make it as big or small as you need.

So, all you do is change the text size to get VGA?

By changing the text size, you can display more text, but other elements (like toolbars) will remain the same size. You will see people refer to VGA in two ways. SE VGA is the display usage by WM2003SE when on a VGA-capable screen (which does have 4 pixels for every 1 on a QVGA display) and does not really make good use of the display capacity. Real VGA is used to denote when the display is actually used to display 4x the screen real estate. To get Real VGA, you will need an app like Nyditot Virtual Display or SE_VGA, since these act as display drivers and allow you to quadruple the display, giving you up to 4 QVGA-equivalents (which makes sense, since there are 4 times as many pixels per area). The benefit of these apps is that all elements of the display can be resized rather than just the text. I'm not sure that SE_VGA is still available anywhere for download, but NVD allows for much more display control. Just be aware that screen redraws can be a little slower if you set your display resolution to something other than its actual physical resolution.
