Hi,

I am currently using the unlimited cingular data plan and tried pinging my pda with the IP address assigned to it by cingular.

It does not seem to respond though. Cingular seems to be blocking ICMP traffic. I did do a traceroute and it ends abruptly at this address:

13 66.209.8.14 (66.209.8.14) 143.795 ms 140.075 ms 140.000 ms
14 * * *
15 * * *

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Totempole.

There is probably no way to get around this. Cingular obviously doesn't want people to be able to ping machines on its subscriber network for security reasons. What exactly are you trying to do with your PDA that you require it to answer to ping?

Not to mention your pda is being NATed by Cingular.

JMI wouldn't think that. Most ISPs hand out public IPs, not private ones. I think the possibility that Cingular is blocking ICMP is more likely. No way around that.

I have the Cingular service and I have a private IP.

Your assigned IP is in the range(s)?
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

Sven, sorry if I come across sounding like a jerk, that is definitely not my intent. Yep. I have an RFC1918 address. :) Specifically, in the 10.x.x.x range.

Just to be clear, the address I am talking about is the one Cingular has assigned to my pda.

And just so I have the OPs situation straight: the OP is trying to ping from a host on the internet to his PDA which is using Cingular for internet access. Sound correct?

Now that I have time to think about the OP, he shouldn't be able to even start a traceroute to his PDA if it has an RFC1918 address. So with that mindset, he should have a publicly routable IP on his PDA.

Now the question is: How do I get one of those from Cingular.

Totempole: can you post the IP you have from the PDA and the full traceroute? Thanks.
