Is there a way to tell if you're connected with EDGE or GPRS for Cingular service besides the connection speed?

you will see a letter 'E' somewhere in the screen of you device if you recieve EDGE signal. otherwise you will see 'G' or gprs or some sort of signal indicating that you are connected

which device are you using? if you specify your device maybe we can help you in a more detailed way

I suppose speed would be the clearest way to tell. If your bandwidth seems higher than normal....EDGE....if not .....GPRS. Other than that you may be able to find tools that could investigate the network connection and get you more detailed info. If the cell towers are somehow "tagged" for identification, then perhaps VxUtil from www.cam.com might be able to give you the information.
