TomTom then decided to move everything to a core navigation engine which unfortunately has delayed the PPC release. Since then we've seen the core navigation engine on the Palm OS, GO and SmartPhone's. Recently the Pocket PC has caught up with the release of the HP Navigation Kit and now TomTom are ready to release TomTom Navigator 5."</i><br /><br /> <img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/map7.jpg" /> <br /><br />PocketGPS offer a good overview of the new version of TomTom; Navigator 5. Because of the change to the Core Navigation Engine, the review covers both TomTom Navigator 5 for Pocket PC and TomTom Navigator 5 for Palm OS. The new TomTom Bluetooth GPS Receiver that forms part of the package was not reviewed, because the hardware was not ready yet. All-in-all, Navigator 5 seems to be impressive and many outstanding niggles with the previous version have been addresses with this update. There's no word yet as to whether Navigator 5 will be offered for sale as a stand-alone product, or if you can only get it with the bundled GPS receiver and SD card.

Surely they must make available as a standalone product?

I can imagine that existing users can upgrade, but if you want to migrate from a competing product, then why would you want to buy new GPS or SD hardware?

I suppose the way around that would be to buy a stand-alone copy of Navigator 3, and then upgrade that, but it seems a bit dumb.

Welcome StevePritchard. 8) Glad you found us.

I certainly hope they release it as a standalone product. There are a few GPS units that look better than the TomTom one, and it would be good to have the choice. However, TomTom may chose not to. We will keep an eye on it.
