View Full Version : Problem installing to SD card

I have a Garmin M5 Pocket PC. When I try to install anything to the SD card (I've tried 4 different ones), under the Select Destination Media option when I choose Save in Storage Card it says Space available <unavailable>. Then it says "Error Copying File - There is not enough free disk space on the mobile device. Delete one or more files to free disk space and then try again."

I know there is plenty of space because it does this even on a brand new SD card. Has anyone else run into this problem? I've looked all over and can't see to find an answer to this.

What does Start | Settings | Memory Icon | Storage Card say about free memory?

I think when I ran into this problem, free memory as reported there was much lower than expected (i.e. lower than what you'd get counting bytes of all the files). Mine was a well-used SD card. The solution was to reformat the SD card using http://www.softwinter.com/storagetools.html

I've tried reformatting it using multiple programs. It reads the card correctly directly on the pda just not on the computer in ActiveSync.

It shows 304.77 free on my 512. It has no problems reading files if I copy them in windows explorer or in my card writer, but it just won't let me install to it.

This is not a bug - all PDA's behave like so.

This IS a problem, however. You may, until this problem gets corrected, use CabInstl ( http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/cabinstl.shtml ) to install your CAB's onto your storage card.

This is a bit more complicated way of installing apps than right via AS, but at least works. You have to cancel the AS installation and find the CAB files extracted that far, if list element 1 and 2a don't work in the following list I've originally posted at the PPCMag forums:

1, some of these CAB files are distributed by their authors and, therefore, downloadable from the Web.
2, if you don't find them on the web, there're still two ways of getting them:

a, rename the installer EXE file to ZIP, and click on it. If you're lucky, you pass into the ZIP file. Just extract the CAB file that has the substring "ARM" or "XSCALE" in it.

b, if you can't enter the EXE file in above-mentioned way, just start the EXE file. If your ActiveSync is installed, the program will put all their CAB files into a specific directory and you can, later, find them and copy them to the MMC card by hand.

Where are these files? Most probably, in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\, in a subdirectory.

There may be cases, mostly with bigger programs, that the CAB files are put somewhere else inside C:\Program Files\. Then, you may want to look for new directories there and/or do a generic *.cab file search (for example, Alt-F7 in Total Commander).

In very few cases (for example, with Agile Messenger; see for example http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=116572 on this problem), the CAB's are put in a completely different place, in :\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

You may also want to check out http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36674 on generic storage card issues - it's not directly related to this very problem, however. Gerard and accessdenied has also posted some good info at BH to http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=113244

So, everyone has to deal with this problem?

Thank you for all of the information.

Nope, it's just the free disk space of any non-RAM memory that isn' displayed by AS.

The write error is a completely different question.
