View Full Version : GMail On Your Pocket PC's Browser

<a href="http://www.gmail.com">http://www.gmail.com</a><br /><br />GMail may be available on your Pocket PC. Google recently started making a "Basic HTML" view available to non-standard browsers. I can't see it on my account yet, but I have had numerous reports from others that have and confirmed that it works fine on Pocket IE. Try it out if you have a GMail account. It will either work, or it won't, yet. :D <br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2005/20050301-gmail.gif" />

Seems to be almost working for me... I get a loading thing and then it never shows up... before i think it just said its incompatible w/ the browser... don't care either way though since it works w/ pop3 and thus my inbox... now if only MSN (which I am a paying member of) would do the same w/o charging me an extra $5 a month.

You can enjoy it right now with POP3 forwarding. This is an option you setup in you GMail account online. Then you setup a new GMail e-mail account on your Pocket PC and off you go!

It has been working just fine for me :D

Weeks/months ago, GMail did not allow me to login at all using PIE. I managed to login these few days, but the problem is it stops after showing "Loading ..." :grumble:

I've got the same results as OneAngryDwarf. I tried NetForce as well with worse results - just goes back to the logon page. I'd say it's better than before, but really if you can't get at your mail, I guess it's just different.

I have never had good luck consistently accessing GMail via Pocket Inbox. WebIS mail works, but it takes up a pretty big footprint on my device and hasn't been 100% stable on my HX4705 - sometimes it just shuts down for some reason. I'd love for the WebAccess to work if it could.

Same problem for me. I get to the "Loading..." screen and it never goes any further. The pop3 forwarding is nice but I'd love to be able to view my entire message archive without having to download it all into messaging. I hope this feature gets fixed soon.

This question may seem dumb but what do I set up as the domain? Is there a clear instruction set for pocket inbox with gmail?

Try again- you might have posted that in the 20 second downtime where libgmail was being updated (stupid slow connection at work...). I started doing some improvements to the Wiggster Gmail site, but now I'm not sure if it's worth it (still, there will soon be a GMail Pocket formatted for Smartphones (http://wiggster.com/gmailsmart/)... probably tomorrow)

You have to use it to see how well it works. Until GMail, I abhored any web based email system. I pull my hair out when I have to go back to Hotmail or Yahoo to catch up on whatver came in that week that wasn't spam related.

A question for those of you that use a 3rd party to login to gmail - like those mentioned in this thread. What assurance do you have that your gmail address and passwords have not been compromised (not saying that they have and cerainly not trying to cast suspicion on anyone)?

Maybe I am a little paranoid and maybe I try to protect my email a little too much, but I have a real problem when it comes to handing a 3rd party my keys....

Just my .02 - YMMV

The way gmail light works you "keys" are encrypted though the whole process but that doesn't stop someone from making a fake gmail light and collecting user data.

So I guess the answer to your question is no, there are no assurances. However at least two of the gmail sites mentioned are hosted by prominent menbers on this site and noted pocket pc software developers. So I personally trust them. However I would not go out and use any old gmail light setup. As double insurance i setup my own gmail lite page on my server and read through all the original gmail light code, which is available at source forge and thus not spy/malware, just to reasure myself that the original code was not "evil".

I could very easily make a new account on this site and post in this thread with a link to my new gmail site that is actually a pass word collector.

So everyone should be carful. Just use common sense.

I for one trust this one: http://www.pc-counselor.com/gmail/index.php
The host is very active in these and other forums i read and i use several pieces of his software on my ppc. I trust him not to try to steal my pass word.

Or if you have access to a php web server you can very easily setup your own gmail lite page.

:D

Good points about security. I don't use gmail for anything I necessarily need to keep secure. It's mostly extra storage space. I have other email accounts that I use for logging into and purchasing from retail sites like Amazon, eBay, et al. However, if you think about it, how do you know that using the offical GMail or Hotmail sites are secure? What's to keep a Microsoft or Google employee from reading through your email for passwords, credit card numbers, etc? The only way to be sure is to host your own mail server and secure it yourself.

Do you guys know if you can set an exclusive filter for your email account?
That's the only reason i still use Hotmail, if it's not on my list, it goes straight to the junk mail folder. :?

I don't use any web based service for secure transactions like purchases. They go to a POP server and get deleted when I download, which is usually almost instantly. I don't even want it on my ISP's email backup.

Just so you all know, you can trust me and my site. But should you? No. You know nothing about me, except that I post on here and have Strong Bad playing Duck Pond Simulator on my avatar. As was mentioned before, not just here but every time this is brough up; if you want Pocket GMail/gmail-lite, put it on your own server. It's free, and many people have it for download.

How do I know you can trust me, though? Because I have a script that zips up my Gmail directory and lets you download it, and I'd be too lazy to fake it and have two gmail directories and zip one... too much effort

But get back on topic, people! Gmail is doing an HTML version themselves!

Gmail is not like Hotmail at all, way better for me! I don't that much spam in my gmail account and the spam filter is really good so far.
Plus, I don't get the weekly "MSN Staff" spam. :p
I use my gmail account mostly for my mailling list Gmail group thread together, that's a really nice feature.

I have 50 Invites (as everyone I think!) drop me a mail at [email protected] if you want to try it.

hiya, I just wanted to mention that I tried with MS IE in latest ROM with WM2003SE and with NetFront and Gmail is not working still.

Pity, I think Google coudl make it working, particularly because NetFront has rich JavaScript support and it can display Google's banners too...

Actually, this feature has been around for many weeks now. I remember testing it out a month ago, and I didn't get past the "Loading" screen. Today, I'm still stuck in the same situation, so I'm not really sure when (if?) the rollout will be complete for all Gmail users.

I've conducted tests in both PIE and NetFront (using the standard NetFront and an IE6 equivalent UserAgent), and it fails to work properly. I'll sit and wait...for now.

Guys what is all the fuss about g-mail on the PPC? Seriously. You can enable POP and simply setup a mail account on the thing like any other. Granted you don’t get the sorting features of g-mail. *shrugs* I never did get into that aspect of the service. Each their own I guess. :)

Gmail allows 1gb storage. I doubt you’d want 1000MB of information sitting in your Inbox on your PDA, now would you?

Also, the sorting is one of the best things about it; try and do a normal search on your inbox and see how it compares to a Google search.

There may be a bit of horizontal scrolling involved for some, but it's not a huge dilemma. It's still packed with features, so all you Gmail junkies, grab your Pocket PC and start logging in to your account to check out what is and isn't included in this so-called "basic" Gmail service. I'm not going to list the features here, since I'm sure most of you prefer being able to poke around yourself. ;)

P.S. I've tested it in PIE and NetFront. It works for both. Perhaps people using other browsers (e.g. Thunderhawk) can report their findings here.

Seems to be working fine for me using Cingular and a bluetooth connection to my 4700. Even in MS WM VGA mode the banner at the top is unobtrusive. One of the reasons I can't seem to break myself of the habit of using a two device solution. As much as I love the PDA2K - VGA e-mail and Web Browsing are SO much better in VGA.

I sure wish HTC and Cingular would come together to announce US support for the MDA IV. That is my new lustworthy device.

No, I don't get the browse button for attachments within PIE either. However, I can access GMail with Netfront, and low and behold Netfront provides the Browse button. I am able to attach files for sending using Netfront 3.1 on my PDA2K.

Don't know why PIE doesn't display it. I typically usine WebIS mail when sending attachments so not a big issue to me, but you may want to report it to the GMail team.

When trying to in PIE, there aren't any buttons to browse for a file to attatch.

Can't get to my inbox under Netfront to see if it has the same problem :T

nope... everything seems to be working until you get to the part where you click the "browse" button. there isn't one in pocket ie. hehee. oh well. ;)

I just reinstalled Netfront 3.1, and under the default settings I cannot get into gmail.

Mind sharing your browser's settings?

I also have webismail, and although I quite fancy it's full functionality, I prefer the layout scheme google uses with conversation grouping, and is why I am determined to get everything working under Netfront.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how much of this you need - but here goes:
General - 1024 Cache; Use AutoComplete, Accept Cookies
View: - Mode Normal; All boxes in View are checked on, including JavaScript. Advanced View: Everything Checked
Helper - External App/Plug-in is set to plug-in, but no plug-ins are checked.
Security - All SSL and TLS versions are checked.
Misc - User Agent is set to NetFront v3.1 Standard
Misc Advanced - Send Referer is Checked, Default User CSS is not enabled - Region to decode - Foreground = ALL, Background = Viewport only

Good luck, I hope this helps. :D

Can't. PIE doesn't understand the HTTP PUT tag. You'd have to check another browser and see if it supported it.

Thanks for posting this. I confirmed I had the same settings, and was still recieving my error, "too many redirects."

After remembering to empty my cache, things began to work in Netfront.

Attatching files works, you must input your own path to the file, because the browse function doesn't work.

Interestingly, I have to use PIE to retrieve attatchments, as trying to in Netfront takes me back to the login page.

In any case, it's working, Thanks :)

Slight update:

Earlier today, it said "You are currently using X MB (Y%) of your 1000 MB."

Now, it says "You are currently using X MB (Y%) of your 1046 MB."

So it's approximately 5% more storage.

Update: The 46 is now 49. Something good's happening!

All throughout the day, the page is (via some Javascript) upping how much space it says you have. Check out the Gmail login page (might have to log out to see it).

Rumor has it that we'll have 2GB of permanent space now.

Yes. April 1, 2004 - Google had the world thinking they were fooled when they announced Gmail. However, and as we all know, Gmail is here to stay. April 1, 2005 - Google announce 2GB of storage (increasing incrementally from 1GB), as well as support for rich formatting. My account already has the new changes, and I'm sure this isn't an April Fool's joke. If it is, consider my cache unrefreshed, and me a monkey's uncle.
