<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=266417&fcc_id='NM8HHH06C'' target='_blank'>https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/..._id='NM8HHH06C'</a><br /><br /></div>Unfortunately, HTC successfully filed a confidentiality request with the FCC, so we don't have the <i>full</i> details on this device, but it appears that a HTC Pocket PC Phone (or, at least, the full details of it) is slated to be released this summer. The test report also shows that it'll have GSM/EDGE on both the 850 and 1900 bands, which is important for North America. About all you can see of the device is a back with an FCC sticker:<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20050220-HTCPPC.jpg" /><br /><br />So, the million dollar question -- which device is it? I'm hoping it's a US version of the <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37621">HTC Universal</a> (otherwise known as the MDA IV). :) Time to place your bets!<br /><br /><b>Update:</b> Looks like I would have lost the bet -- the forum members agree it's most likely the HP hw6500. I hope the fact that it's manufactured by HTC means a good-quality unit.

It looks like a picture of something a car ran over.

The XDA IV doesn't have a speaker on the back. Also, there's supposed to be a camera there on the back.

The USB port on the MDA IV prototype is flush with the casing, this one is raised.

Can someone link to a picture of the MDA IV (and its back) so we can all make comparisons?

It looks like the iPaq Mobile Messenger h6500 to me. Doesn't HTC make some HP devices?

I prefer one million euro. How can I get it?

It´s really the HP 6500.

This was on Engadget over the weekend. They found it strange that it would be cleared by HTC rather then HP. Yep....definitely the hw6500. SO looking forward to this one. It is the most like the Treo. Even has a squarish screen too.

Here is another picture of the phone (it is HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger that will be available commercially in 2nd half of April 2005):

Suffice to say: I will buy it. I already decided.

i hate to say it, but at one time pocket pc thoughts was the best place for the latest news and rumours on pocket pcs, but now it seems to get scooped all the time (as on this info which was available elsewhere several days ago) and focuses more on software press releases and reviews rather than hardware news. while both have their uses, i regret no being able to find the latest breaking hardware news at ppct anymore.

Hmm - we've almost never been about scoops for years, so I'm not quite sure what you were referring to -- we will post on things as quickly as we can, but there are other sites with full-time staff covering their site all hours of the night, whereas we're a collection of volunteers talking about our favorite PDAs. As for being a PR clearinghouse, I just took a look at the frontpage and see not one PR link amongst the top 5 articles, so maybe you're surfing a different site than me. :?

I don't know Janak. I can relate to him but I am NOT going to get in a arguement or flame fest this time. On the otherhand, I realize COMPLETELY why it's damn near impossible to get scoops on anything. Even PR stuff. No company, not even HP or Dell wants anyone to know a THING about what;s coming. I think that the current Apple suit (that's on hold now) seems to point that in the near future, NDA's are going to be tighter then all get out and damn near impossible for sites like PPCThoughts to get. Personal and volunteer websites getting the scoop on the bigs is going to be darn near impossible.. Also, be careful about what you say Janak....what may be a normal post to you may seem like a PR piece or Advertising to someone else. In any case, I love talking about the new stuff....

In any case, this looks like a promising device....if HP did not BLOW it like they did on the 6315. At least they included the detachable keyboard on the 6315. The hw6500 looks awesome and it's definitely pretty near what I have been looking for. VGA is nice, but 240x320 is fine too.

Thats 240x240 btw. Still fine?

Anyway, I agree that ppcthoughts can be a bit slow with the latest stories. I understand (maybe wrongly) that stories are put in a kind of queue, so one comes on every few hours. There is not usually any "stop the presses" kind of postings. For these kind of things the best place to look is the various forums, where individuals post e.g. Howards forum, and also the sites dedicated to the specific manufacturer e.g Aximsite or firstloox.

While I am on my soap box, can I say I find the 5 stories per front page very limiting. It makes it look as if the site has no content. If somebody happens to hear about the mda 4 now, they may pop over here and think its not being covered, because its in small print right at the end of the page. Postings (and viewings) on a story drops of dramatically once it drops of the 5 most recent stories. I think a better method needs to be found to reduce bandwidth, maybe using smaller pictures for older stories, but keeping at least 3 days worth of news on the front page.

Well, there are, but they're fairly rare. It's hard to find a good volunteer who doesn't have a job and has permanent Internet access, ready to jump on the scoops. And...

Or, equivalently, we know a fair bit about what's coming but are bound by strict NDAs not to speak. However, this has been true for quite some time. What you've seen is the emergence of a new class of sites that are not bound by the same NDAs, and as such it feels like PPCT is getting slower. We haven't really changed, actually.

Re the frontpage configuration: this is something Jason specifically architected. We've all given feedback on it, so let's see what happens -- he just got back from vacation. ;)

Now, let's get back on topic.

If equipped with a good data plan and a decent browser (Minimo), more then fine. I'd even be cool with 320x320. Just not 160x160.

Is this thing going to have network Bluetooth drivers? Since it uses EDGE I hope so. My current SX66 has never been able to connect to my laptop as a modem/network connection. I want to use EDGE with my laptop via bluetooth, like I did with my Nokia 6820. This may be perfect for me. Anyone know?

Usually, most GSM phones come with capable Bluetooth DUN Profiles.
The SX-66 does as well, although you'll need some patches and extra steps to work it through. PM me and I'll try to help you further.

The Bluetooth Networking profiles (PAN and LAN) are not what you're looking for. They would only be useful in this situation if there was software on the Pocket PC that would allow it to be an Internet gateway.

It's a COOL little device. I can care less about GPS though and the lack of WiFi makes the device D.O.A. Bummer.

According to rumor (http://www.brighthand.com/article/More_About_the_iPAQ_hw6500_hw6700_Series?site=PPC), there's supposed to be a followup model called the iPAQ hw6700 coming later this year that will have Wi-Fi. Sadly, to make room, the SD card slot in the hw6500 will have to be left out of its successor. This will leave the hw6700 with just a miniSD card slot.
