First, welcome to the board :)

You'll want to read http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34144 .

2) how can you play subtitles on a ppc

Up to now, it's not possible. You'll need to 'burn' the subtitles in your video files. There's a tutorial at http://www.videohelp.com/srtsubsvirtual.htm describing how they can be burned to MPEG1/2 files; AVI files are pretty similar.

3) Is there a program for me to actually talk instead of type for my messenger account ( skype can talk but it uses another account)

Unfortunately, there's none. Microsoft Portrait ( http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/ ), the other Skype-like VoIP product, only supports its own protocol, albeit it can textually (!) chat via your MSN account. So, you'll be able to use your MSN account to tell your friends to fire up Microsoft Portrait to chat. You may want to check out http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/tables.aspx on the different chatting situations between PC and PPC users. However, as 1, it has an integrated MSN client 2, requires far lower bandwidth (also see http://www2.freeweb.hu/menneisyys/portrait/ on this subject), you may prefer it to the separated "standard" MSN Messenger + Skype combo.
