Running to your window, you peer out over the red soil that marks the land they've named "Crimson", the land they believe destroyed their home. Frankly, I exected a much worse game (after all, it's just the first game of LLC). Sure, it's a no-go if you compare it to, e.g., PDAMill's or Astraware's games, but, otherwise, can be quite good to kill the time with. I played at least about 10 minutes with it, and didn't want to stop :)

Compatible with VGA machines; of course, it's QVGA only. Ran on my PL720 even without Picard's GAPI hack fast. No music, only pretty bad sound effects. Still, worth trying out, if you're looking for something that can be operated almost exclusively with the stylus and revives the good old C64/ZX Spectrum days :)

Thank you for this review. We (Parking Lot Games) were very excited to release Onslaught, as it is the first glimpse into the (very extensive) Crimson world. I thank you for your insights into our first release, as I'm sure they will help us to establish our strengths and weaknesses alike. If you liked the concepts, story, and feel of Onslaught, hopefully you will find our future releases to be fun and immersive as well. Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes, and congratulate our accomplishments.

I installed this late at night and was possibly being stupid... but I had problems with the installer.
I ran the exe I downloaded from Handango, and a non standard Windows CE installer appeared, with an option to install to a non-default location.
I selected my CF card, and a status bar moved on the installer, but nothing appeared on my PPC. I then ran the installer again, but it crashed.
Checking my device, no new icons were present but I found the Onslaught Demo directory on my flash card, and ran the exe - but all it did was open a window that streamed loads of garbage characters in it.

I suspect I've managed to install a (desktop) Windows executable to my device, but I'm not quite sure how...

Should the installer bring up the normal ActiveSync dialogue, asking where the game should be installed to?

I doubt it.

Should the installer bring up the normal ActiveSync dialogue, asking where the game should be installed to?

If you've unloaded the installation files on your PC, check your Microsoft ActiveSync folder (usually in \Program Files) or perhaps a Crimson Onslaught folder (probabaly in \Program Files as well) for a CAB file. If you copy this to your Pocket PC, you can probably install it that way.

I haven't yet tried this game, so those are the only suggestions I can offer thus far.

Greetings,

I've had one other report of issues with the installer, so I went ahead and put up a link on our site to download a .ZIPped archive of the files within the packaged installer. You'll of course need some program to handle .ZIP files (if you're running WinXP, it should be built in).

There are four files, only one of which you need on your PPC device: that's the main OnslaughtPPC.exe. The other three are merely .TXT files (instructions, license, and readme). I'd suggest you read through these, but they're not necessary to have on the device.

To install it, you can manually use Activesync to copy it to a location of your choosing. The default directory is \Program Files\OnslaughtDemo\, but it's not required. Feel free to place it wherever you wish. You will have to manually create a shortcut to the \Start Menu\Programs (or \Games) if you want to launch it easily.

The packaged installer does not seem to actually bring up the regular Activesync window. Because of this, sometimes it seems as though the installer has crashed, when it really hasn't. I HAVE noticed that, because of this, it feels like it takes longer than a standard Activesync (but I haven't timed it to prove whether it's faster or slower).

How long did you let the installer sit while it was installing? Was it closed prematurely? Or did it close on its own? Or did it actually lock up with a "Not Responding" message?

As for the behavior on your device, it seems that perhaps something happened during the install and the file may have been corrupted. As long as you downloaded the proper file (OnslaughtPPC_demo_v1xx), you should have the PPC version. The windows demo is OnslaughtWin_demo_v1xx). The actual .EXE files are named similarly to prevent confusion. Respectively, the actual program .EXEs are OnslaughtPPC.exe and OnslaughtWin.exe.

I'm currently looking into other PPC installers right now to help resolve this issue in the future. However, in the interim our download page hosts the .ZIP file archives:
