This is an old problem of mine, dating back to the first revolutionary Pocket PC, the iPAQ 3600. The trouble is, they generally turn out some of the best Pocket PCs on the market; and the end result is that the name iPAQ has become synonymous with Pocket PC in many consumers' minds. Not that we've loved every iPAQ off the line, the rz1715 was, for the price, lacking even for an entry level model. But overall they've done a great job with the iPAQ hx4700 VGA model and the hx2750 being two stunning hits among high end models released in the past few months. The hx2750 is simply a great Pocket PC, as it should be for the hefty $549 US price tag. In fact, it beat out the previous champ, the Dell Axim X30 624MHz model in our benchmarks and is the fastest Pocket PC to date. Not only that, it has an exceptional display that's noticeably better than those found on most other Pocket PCs."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20050105-PDABGiPAQ2750.jpg" /><br /><br />If you don't need a VGA screen Pocket PC, this unit looks to be the one to get -- fast processor, lots of RAM <i>and</i> ROM, biometrics, and an amazing QVGA display. Plus an over-the-top flip cover! Come on, HP, I'm waiting for the "7450", which would be the sum of the 2750 and the 4700. :P

Anyone else surprised they couldn't have done VGA for that price?

EDIT: Hey, my #300 post and it had to be a HP criticism ! Now watch my 2215 conk out !

Looks like a great PDA, but sadly it doesn't look good for gaming, the D-pad looks too cramped under the biometric scanner... Gaming is what I use my X30 for all the time :D Oh well, good to see some more PDAs from HP coming out... :)

Oh my Gawd, it does have a lid!! I'm still amazed that removable flip lids aren't common place. Geez they're cheaper than a bag of chips and can save tons of money on broken screens without adding bulk. Finally HP has regained their senses. :werenotworthy:

I really don't understand why they don't offer VGA with this PPC... Another "close, but no cigar" for me... Too expensive for another "disposable" iPAQ. Think there will be an OS upgrade available for this one?

Me neither...

Been waiting for this device since my 4150 got stolen and first heard about it. But now considering that there is a new OS coming out in the next few months maybe I might skip this device and wait for the new batch of devices. How bout you :?:

Personally, I'm choosing to skip this model. Lack of VGA, and a form factor that just doesn't seem to work all that well. Also, the D-pad looks ghastly.

If I were you, I wouldn't wait any more. It's at least 9 months for WM2005 to arrive. IMHO get a device now.

If you have to go WM2003SE, this is the one I like the most.
The touch pad doesn't look great, but it works pretty well (it took a little practice making diagonal hits without hitting the center button).

I wrote a brief "first impressions" over at Daves site about a week ago. For me, I'll probably just keep using my 3950 until it dies (or if something really cool comes out with WM2005), but overall I liked the 2700 a lot.

lots of RAM and ROM

I still want to laugh every time I read that a miserly 128mb is considered "lots".

For what that thing costs, doesn't anyone think it would be reasonable if it came with $70 retail worth of ROM? As in 1GB? Leaving your slots free for I/O?

Not meaning to be rude in the least....but exactly how much I/O do you need when it has WiFi and Bluetooth built in and TWO...yes TWO memory slots for I/O and additional memory. As well as having the most memory of any consumer grade PPC out there. You can put up to 12gig in the CF slot and still have the SD slot for all the I/O you need. I'm sorry I just don't get it!

Why increase the cost of the device with more on board memory when they have given the user the hardware options to choose for themselves?

Two things I would bet on:

1. It would be at least 5-7 months after Microsoft releases WM2005 before you see any manufacturer release a device with it
2. Any device that you have today or buy in the next 6 months, whoever the manufacturer is, will not release a WM2005 update for it

This is based on my experiences with WM2003/WM2003SE and how the device manufacturers handled those potential upgrades.
