http://informationweek.networkingpi...m/news/56900280

"Cingular Wireless said Tuesday that it and Lucent Technologies have successfully completed a call using advanced 3G cellular voice and data technology. The call used High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology that, proponents claim, will offer theoretical data speeds as high as 14.4 Mbps. HSDPA is an extension of UMTS 3G technology, which Cingular has said it plans to role [sic] out in the next two years."

So very cool. 3G is (finally!) coming here to the US -- Verizon has already released the XV6600 with 1xEV-DO, and now on the GSM side of things we're starting to see UMTS. Cingular's network also holds out the promise of good GSM coverage here in the US. I wonder when we'll see UMTS-enabled Pocket PC Phones -- the sooner the better.

I'd give 1 - 2 years for this technology to become available to the general public. At a reasonable price....
