And now, the likelihood it will come to the US has just increased -- the FCC has approved it and put up the details as usual.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20041230-AsusP505.jpg" /><br /><br />According to <a href="http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=501738&native_or_pdf=pdf">the manual</a>, it has a 416MHz XScale, 64MB of RAM and 64MB of ROM, 6cm (2.3in) screen, triband GSM (900/1800/1900), and built-in Bluetooth. It looks like the compactness of this unit is its selling point, like the HTC Magician and E-TEN units we've been reporting on. The manual also makes reference to a "Vodafone menu", so it seems like this unit will actually sell in the UK first -- no idea what the carrier status is here, so we may not see it anytime soon in the US.

i thought the xscale processor was 400mhz and the bulverde was 416mhz.

Bulverde is/was Intel's internal code name for the PXA27x series (http://www.intel.com/design/pca/applicationsprocessors/faq/pxa27x_faq.htm) of XScale processors. The series has processors at 312, 416, 520, and 624 MHz.

I don't think it's the FCC's business to require standards. For better or worse, we have deregulated cellular networks over here. We also have at least two wireless carriers that function solely in the 1900MHz band (T-Mobile/GSM, Sprint/CDMA).

By that measure, why would the FCC approve anything that doesn't support CDMA either? ;)

I really like the look of this thing. The 2.6" screen may be a little small, but it'll make the whole device smaller, so I might be able to live with that. :)

And I kind of find myself hoping that the keypad is removable. It was nice on the sp230, but it got in the way. And I just looked like a complete dork with the keypad flipped open in a call. It reminded me of those ancient Motorola phones with the huge flip keypads. Ick.

Acrobat reader screwed up for me (again :? ), so I can't view the documents.. I just had one question. What is are the dimensions of this unit when the keypad is closed, not including the antennae? Also, will it work on Cingular's service if it's released here?

I really like the look of this thing. The 2.6" screen may be a little small, but it'll make the whole device smaller, so I might be able to live with that. :)

According to the first post the screen is not 2.6" it's "6cm (2.3in) screen" the 6 is the number of cm.

And if it's really 2.3" then it's awefully tiny. The diminutive Archos Gmini 420 has a 2.2" one and it's really too small.

That results in a screen even less than twice as small (surface) as the common PPC devices!!! 8O
