Use Your Plextor ConvertXPVR Content On Your Pocket PC

That's why I was pretty pleased to learn about a project to turn my Mac into a PVR and take the recorded output and play it on a Pocket PC. On the gear-and-gadget site <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/rainydaylectures/RDMGGPlextorConvertXPVR.htm">Rainy Day Magazine</a>, there's a review with instructions on how to setup a <a href="http://www.plextor.com/english/products/TV402U.htm">Plextor ConvertXPVR</a> on your Mac, turning it into a Tivo of sorts. If they left it at that, I probably wouldn't have posted on it here, but I was very pleased to see that they've also included instructions on how to get that PVR content <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/rainydaylectures/RDMGGTVonIPaq.htm">played on your Pocket PC</a> using PocketTV. :rock on dude!: <br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/marlof-20041229-ipaqpvr.jpg" />

Nice to see these programs coming out on the Apple now.

I've tried some of the converters on the PC and they are nice, great if you need to do more editing.

I have the easiest solution of all for programs that are fine the way recorded: My Panasonic E100-H PVR has a built-in SD slot and I just record any shows recorded onto one of my 1GB cards.

It's nice for plane rides when you just can't reach or just don't want to go through the trouble of getting out the laptop.

Speaking of Apple -> Pocket PC conversion,

Has anyone transcoded the awesome Sin City (http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/sin_city.html) QuickTime trailer to play on the PPC? (FYI the music is from Cells by The Servant)

I seem to recall a smaller-size trailer from AOL but I don't remember what format it was in...

That looks like an awful lot of work. I just select which shows I want to sync using my Media Center 2005 remote...

It automatically converts the latest episodes of Desperate Houswives to a 40Mb file and copies it to my Pocket PC SD card while I'm watching other TV shows. It doesn't get much easier than that. Of course, you do need a Pocket PC with Windows Media Player 10.

This would be so much (10x?) cooler if the recording was done in HD (which I know the Plextor does not support), downconverted into ED (640x480 or somewhere around then), exported with DivX (higher quality than MPEG-1) or even WMV, and then played back on a Pocket PC.

Ok, which geek is up to this challenge? :)

You might want to check out the newsgroups. There is a PocketPC movie group dedicated to just this project. Not going to post the name publicly because there are some less than "legitimate" things there, but it is a lively group with lots of stuff posted- TV, tools, cartoons, and the like.

Your best bets would be the DivX format (AVI) or the WMV format. Both offer very good compression whilst keeping quality at a good level (provided you encode the videos well).
