Hi,
I've just got an i-mate Jam with a Vodaphone contract. It gives me 5.1MB of data downloads per month.

If I de-select 'show images' in Pocket IE it gives each web page a size of 0 bytes in 'view' and 'properties'.

Doea that mean I can view an unlimited of web pages as text and only use some of my 5.1MB if images are activated?

Cheers.

no.

The pocket thoughts front page, html only, is 50kbytes. Just save some html only of pages to get a good idea. Also it can depend alot on which web sites support gzip compressed pages and if your browser supports it too.

I've tested GZIP support of a lot of web sites while writing my article on connectivity issues with PDA's (you can check it out at http://menneisyys.freeweb.hu/gprs ; warning: it's non-English). Almost none of them used them (mostly because the high additional server load because of the runtime GZIP encoding). A solution to this:

1, use Skweezer ( http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35450 )

2, and/or, use a local zipper proxy, which not only GZIP's the HTML contents, but may also greatly reduce the image quality / downscale them on-the-fly. This also results in plummeting bandwidth usage. I recommend RabbIT ( http://rabbit-proxy.sourceforge.net/ ) and ziproxy ( http://ziproxy.sourceforge.net/ ) for these purposes. I've discussed these zipper proxies in the above-linked article too.

Feel free to ask additional questions.

No. While text is exceedingly small in file size, it is still counted and is a part of your quota.

Menneisyys makes some good suggestions. I was going to suggest Skweezer, but he already has. You may want to have a look at GRPS Monitor (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/gprsmonitor/?en) which can help keep tabs on how much you have downloaded so far.

menna, huh, guess its just the sites I visisted. I dont think a local proxy is the word for it. You suggest running one of the accelerator proxies "at home" so that you can connect to it over your phone. Using these proxies after the data is sent over your connection would be futile. ;)

That said, im currently using a comercial accelerator proxy service just to make web browsing at 5kbps somewhats ane, www.browseblast.com.

How ever back in the day when i had 2 and 10 megabyte limits, I stuck with WML, but you don't need to stick with like, your cell phones tiny wml browser. Im pretty sure (but its all fuzzy now) that pocket IE supports the display of wml, and lucky us, wml proxies (servers that format html to wml, note that these dont need setup in your browser settings, they are proxy in name only) are public and free.. and I actually have googles Wml proxy bookmarked on my phone (being able to search using numbers is a great time saver).

you can access googles wml proxy via www.google.com/wml. Simply use that url in your phone, you can either search for your site, or directly enter the http of the site you want to view on your wml browser and it will auto format it for you. wrm cleans out alot of the junk in html files, and while this can "break" the way some sites work, you can usually get around most sites and WML is VERY light on the bandwidth usage.

Well, he would get the mobile version (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/mobile/) which at this very moment is 17.4K (without pictures). :)

If you have 24h broadband access at home, and would like to access the proxy from your GPRS phone, it is a viable solution. Just set up one of the ZIPper proxies and also enable pic downscaling. It greatly helps reducing GPRS traffic.

Please note that, as I've pointed out at http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35450 , Skweezer doesn't do any pic downscaling. As far as compression is concered, it only GZIP's HTML pages.

I have found I can easily use 600kb in a day (7hrs) with surfing a few mobile-optomised websites (no pics), email (with no attachments) and MSN.

I use GPRS Monitor and it is a life (and money) saver. Without it, I could easily do 3Mb in a day without realising, and that would cost me a lot!
