View Full Version : The future of emulation

I've had my hx4700 for a couple of months now; it's my second PPC and my 4th PDA.
The progression of this technology continues to astound me, and I've been having a recurring thought over the past 2 months of working with my new iPAQ; since this little device is far more powerful that a PC I had say, 15 years ago, why has no one come up with a Windows 3.1 emulator?

OK, I realise that there are probably legal issues involved, and Old Bill probably wont take his tentacles off the software and release it to the open-source community, but I'm not talking so much about the OS as I am a way of running the tonnes of perfectly good abandonware that's floating around out there.

I really have no idea what's involved in creating an emulator, but I'm curious. So for you devs and techies out there, is this even possible? More trouble than it's worth? Illegal? Has someone done it already and I havn't heard about it?

There's lots of emulators out there for other systems, and I think there's even a DOS one, but probably it wouldn't support very much.

I can't think of anything from Win3.1 that I would want to run, but DOS, sure.

Anyway, there is support for a few SPECIFIC games from LucasArts. Do a quick search on SCUMMVM. ;)

Cool I'll have a look, thanks. As to what you might want to run, take a look here (http://www.abandonia.com/index2.php) for tons of abandoned software. That should be enough to get you started.

I think I might get a few games from here to play for free! :D

For interest's sake, have a look at this thread (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28261). :)
