Hi,

Have anyone heard when will the existing prices for HP iPaq / Toshiba / Dell etc drop? When will new products come to market so that existing products will drop in price?

I hope to buy a PPC but am still waiting for price drop and not sure when it will happen. Hopefully before Feb 2005?

Thanks in advance.

As the months roll by, you can expect prices of existing devices to drop, regardless of new devices entering the market or not. My bet is that there won't be any major introduction of a whole new set of WM2003SE devices, since WM2005 is supposedly just around the corner. With that in mind, I'm not expecting a set of new devices to come out until next year, and most probably, after February 2005.

If you want to take advantage of price cuts in Pocket PCs, keep your eyes peeled for Pricegrabber offerings, package sales, discount coupons, post-Christmas sales, etc.

By around the corner I assume you mean September of 2005 for wm2005... They have just released the last batch of wm2003SE devices... and they usually have a self-life of approximately 12 - 18 months...

When I say the latest line, that includes all the VGA devices... of these the Asus a730W is just getting to North America... the Dell x50V is still in short supply... and the Hx4700, Loox 720 and the Toshiba e830 are all less than 4 months old.

The Dell has dropped significantly in price and you can't help but expect that a model with more ram is on the way. The Toshiba has also dropped significantly in price over the last few weeks. I have been tracking the Toshiba and since it's arrival in Canada about 5 weeks ago... the price has dropped from the inital $699 to the current $549... Makes you think that maybe they plan to pull the plug on Canada too. As long as they cover the warranty... it really does not matter to me.

So if you are asking me.. the VGA models will hold their prices for a while... but if your looking for a QVGA device... I would be surprised if the pricing for them did not go through the floor in the near future.

I have not opened my unit yet... but in playing with it in the store... I believe that any current VGA user would tell you... they would never go back...

Ripper, are you sure that WM 2005 comes out September of next year? I heard that it was in the first half of next year.

Anyways - I think I will wait.

I am not sure of anything... just like everyone else... it is base on rumor... And based on how things have worked in the past... I am basing it on that...

The new units have just arrived... and the manufacturers will require some time to integrate the new OS so I don't think that September is unreasonable...

Heh. Rumour this. Rumour that. It won't be before February 2005 - that's for sure.

are you able to upgrade the OS on pda's from 03 to 05?

Good question. This is left entirely to the manufacturer to decide. Some companies allowed for people to upgrade from Pocket PC 2002 to WM2003 (at a cost). However, we didn't see such a widespread upgrade path for WM2003 devices when WM2003SE was released. Toshiba offered a free upgrade to WM2003SE on a couple of their devices, but HP and Dell did not. Updating the Pocket PC OS isn't like popping a Windows CD in and letting it do its work. Every Pocket PC requires its own special version of a ROM update due to the currently-employed hardware abstraction layers (HALs).

according to the rumors, WM2005 only comes later next year. If we're lucky, in Autumn; if not, in Winter only (or the next spring ;) )

If we have to wait until 2006 for WM2005, I want my Pocket PC to be able to come to me when I call it :?
