The last entry in our Special Series is from William Sydney Porter, best known to his fans as O. Henry. Although famous for his short story “The Gift Of The Magi,” Porter wrote numerous anthologies of shorts filled with wit and irony. Porter had been working in a bank in Austin, TX, but escaped the country when funds went missing and it appeared he would be wrongly accused for the crime. Upon hearing of his wife's death, Porter returned to the US where he was arrested and jailed. He assumed the O. Henry moniker and began crafting short stories. One such story, likely inspired by people he met while in jail, is “The Ransom Of Red Chief” in which two bumbling kidnappers hold a child for money...but get more than they bargained with a twist ending that O. Henry became famous for in his stories. Our Reading List highlights a couple of O. Henry's anthologies, while also spotlighting other ebooks dealing with kidnapping and ransom...and one author who is a Ransom in name only.
