4 GB *flash* memory for a teeny bit more than an ipod mini...

What's a 4GB CF card cost, Kati? (Yeah, I could look it up, but others reading this thread won't have to bother Googling after you answer :) )

VERY nice! What are you planning to do with the space? Is this all about mp3's or are you preparing for jury duty with wmv's of the final season of Friends? :)

(Last time they called me, I sat in the pool room forever before being called to a court and then sent home without even getting interviewed. Next time I'm gonna be prepared!)

I can have 160Gigabyte on my Sigmarion.

Aaaah, the joys of USB 2.0 hosting.

I laugh at your puny pathetic hard drive, I laugh at it, laugh I tells ya.

It's flash, and a whole lot smaller than your 160GB hard drive. More portable, unless you have really big pockets... oh, and the PDA will actually last for some time. ;)

Cool. Now you've finally got room to rip all of those John Phillip Sousa and Yanni CDs.

I really want that card! At this point, I am planning on waiting for the 2gb card to drop to $100 or less. I have seen it as low as $114 on Buy.com but for some strange reason, they keep chaging the price (almost daily to weekly) and it is up to over $250! I remember when I paid $130 for a 128mb sd card and less than 3 months ago, I bought a 512mb sd card for $61 and thought I was putting Kingston out of business--they are half that now!

Yeah - these price fluctuations are pretty common nowadays. It's a lot like PC RAM memory prices too. They change every week - depending on market demand and supply. More people are demanding the sub-1GB cards, than the 4GB cards, so you'll expect greater price drops across the smaller sizes. However, that's not to say the larger size cards don't drop in price. It just takes a while for the changes to be implemented. :D

I paid $150 for my 4GB microdrive. I've see it for $128 after rebate. You can even get a 5GB one for under $200.

All you need to do is buy a creative labs Nomad mp3 player. Take it appart, put the drive in your PDA. I have 2.5 gigs of music, and 1 gig of movies. It rocks.

These prices remind me of the time, around 1988 or so, when I had an 80386-based desktop. I save up for a 20 MB hard drive, one of the largest available, at CompuAdd, for $200. I was surprised to find they had a 30 MB in stock, for $300. I was so impressed at the thought of so much storage that I sprang for the extra $100.

At that price per MB, that 4 GB postage stamp would cost around $40,000.

Now what I want to know is if the 20MB disk was MFM, and the 30GB an RLL disk. :P ;) The latter would need a more expensive controller, 16-bit preferable. The Seagate ST238R was all over the place. Too bad it was so unreliable.

Am I dating myself...?

Exactly why I am skipping a VGA enabled PPC with W2003SE and holding off for WM2005. My trusty h4150 is serving me very well! I was going to say it is hard but not really when nothing new has struck me as much as the h4150 did. Would still love 4gb of storage in there though! ;)

You can put the battery in the cradle for the 8 hours, put the device (batteryless) in the cradle, power on from the AC, install stuff, backup (just in case), and when the 8 hours are up, put the charged battery in the device.

I did this just in case it's bad to use the device while the battery is in it and charging for the first time.

I've been out all evening. That would indeed have been a good plan. I did not know you could do that safely. Cheers for the heads up.

I shall be patient, go to bed now and get to work on it early tomorrow.

I'm watching the currency conversion rates with great interest at the moment. I could buy an X50v for £224 at the moment in the US and pick it up when myself or a colleague is over in a US office! Still very tempting!

And it looks like it's going to get even better for us Europeans. Which makes the US/UK, Europe price discrepancies even more galling. :?
