I was updating my Dell Axim X30 with a new ROM image yesterday (WMP10! Woo hoo!) and I noticed something that made me chuckle:

 Have a great weekend everyone!

Jason, where did you get the WMP10 update? I have an X3i and that doesn't show up on Dell.com. I can't believe they are not releasing that for the X3i... :(

I updated my X30, not the X3i. Different device. :-)

I know they're different... Does anyone know if Dell will release WMP10 for the X3i?

No, they won't. They've only confirmed that they're releasing it for their 2003 SE devices (X30 and X50).

I noticed this when I was updating as well. Frankly, it scared me to death. When I'm updated my ROM and have the ability to turn my Axim into a coaster, I don't like seeing mistakes of any kind. :?

After using WMP 10 for a couple of weeks I'm not impressed. They screwed up the playlists & button assignments on the X30. Be careful for what you ask for.

I'm sure those were the only 8 bits of data that were wrong.

A lot of these spelling mistakes are often overlooked during production. If you have ever been to an English version of a website who's native language is not English, you will find a collection of spelling and grammatical errors scattered throughout. On the bright side of things, I suppose all you want to get out of the ROM update is the performance boost (perhaps...), so I suppose a spelling mistake can be forgiven. :P

Well, boot ROMs are usually made by the OEM. If the OEM is based outside of an English-speaking country, little spelling typos and the like are surprisingly common.

Yeah, and normally when these are going through their test cycles, the people are so intent on catching the big fish that the little ones slip through.

Yea but considering that its only a few lines of text due to no need to be "descriptive", not to mention im sure during testing, they saw this text alot vs the "user informative reassurance" text which was the last thing put in for the update, its pretty bad that the mistake got this far

An error like this would scare me too, back in the dos day's, when the screen was commonly in text modes, lockups and glitches took the forms of characters on the screen turning into other characters. baaad flash backs man....

Hi all.

Since this update was released for Axims I have been patiently waiting for its competitor HP to update my 2200. Has anyone heard of anything from them?

You mean a WM2003SE and/or WMP10 Mobile ROM update for your 2200?

If so, no go. 99.9% chance that it won't happen.

The only available ROM updates are just bug fixes and feature enhancements in the form of a 1.10 (I think) ROM update which can be obtained from their site.

WMP10 is designed to function best with MP10 on the desktop. It comes close to giving you a PMC experience on your PPC. Playlists can be created on the desktop and imported, or sync'd. Once on the device they can be added to or subtracted from as I understand it. You just can't create news one on the device. The philosophy was that folks normally would prefer managing playlists on the desktop, not the PPC. That might make an interesting poll to see if that is actually the case.

The buttons are a different subject all together.

I was hoping that with Dell releasing a major update like this, that it might spur HP into doing the same. *sigh*
