View Full Version : Asking for help - E805, 2003 upgrade & IA Presenter

I need some help. After over a year of owning a Toshiba E805 (with the Presentation pack) I have finally got the Wifi working. I want to use it to check my email on an upcoming trip. Using IE I can get to the webmail site, but the log in goes to a white screen.

Toshiba suggest that I upgrade the Windows Mobile 2003. Although they can't say if that will really do anything.

I regularly use the presentation pack and IA Presenter for Powerpoint presentations. As I am sure you all know IA Style is gone. So no upgrade is available that I know of.

So here are the questions; will the upgrade get me through the log in page to check my email on wifi; will the upgrade screw up the IA Presenter?; is there a better slide show program?; is there a better browser?

Sorry for the length of this posting.

Michael

Off the top of my head I'd say that your ISP is using browser- or version-specific code. I have experienced similar 'blank' screens in the past caused by this.

You can probably test this by installing the trial version of Pocket IE Plus, then use the settings to pretend that you are running IE 5 or IE 6

By the way I love this product ... :-)

Welcome, Michael! First of all, I think an upgrade is unecessary for your particular problem - you should be able to connect to the internet via WiFi with your current operating system. Can you access any other web pages besides your webmail page?

Is there a better slide show program?
Check out Pocket Slides 2.0. (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=X86EA2118XC379F2B2B3XD54914D6969&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=24595&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1)

Is there a better browser?
That depends on what you're looking for and how much you're willing to pay. PIEPlus, (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=X86EA2118XC379F2B2B3XD54914D6969&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=84128&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1) MultiIE (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=X86EA2118XC379F2B2B3XD54914D6969&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=128159&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1) and Spb PocketPlus (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=X86EA2118XC379F2B2B3XD54914D6969&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=50351&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1) all add to the functionality of PIE. Netfront ACCESS 3.1 (http://www.handango.com/ampp/store/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=311&jid=X86EA2118XC379F2B2B3XD54914D6969&platformId=2&productType=2&productId=92934&sectionId=0&catalog=30&topSectionId=-1) is a totally separate browser with tab and java functionality, and Thunderhawk (http://www.bitstream.com/wireless/products/pocketpc/index.html) sports landscape mode, fast proxy-based, "full page" rendering.

I can veiw other web pages just fine. The problem occurs after filling out the user id and password on the Webmail page. When I tap the Log In key it goes to a white screen. The http/ bar is still there. If I hit refresh the Microsoft flag pops up in the upper right corner for a moment then goes away.

I will check out the othe rprograms.

Thanks!

Okay. So I downloaded Pocket Slides 2.0. So far I am unable to complete the conversion/sync process. It indicates a lack of memory or read only files. Neither are true.

I downloaded the Handango browser. No change. I can still get to the log in page, then it goes to a white page with no email.

Would the upgrade make the Pocket Slide program work better?

Did you try changing how IE identifies itself? Try this:-

Open PIE
Press the PIE button (blue cross) and select Option ...
Select the PIE tab
In the Identification drop-down, choose Either Identify as IE 5.5 or 6.0
Close (shut down) PIE
Relaunch PIE and try your webmail again.

Try with both IE 5.5 and IE 6.0 settings. Make absolutely sure you properly close PIE between changing the settings, otherwise they make no difference.

Okay. I tried the changes you recommended. It did cause a change. Now instead of going from the Log In screen to a blank screen it goes from the Log In screen back to the Log In screen. But now the User ID is still filled in.

I will keep trying different ways.
Thanks.

Well - at least this appears to confirm that there is something browser-specific in the code that is giving you somthing unexpected on the PDA.

Three other suggestions

1, Are you completely, absolutely certain you have a blank screen? I have been in the situation before where I have been trying to view a site on PDA that had a large backbround image that appeared completely white ... scrolling way down the page revealed the expected content.

2, Maybe you need to contact your ISP tech support. Perhaps they can help you find a solution or offer a different method of access that works.

3, Have you tried setting up the uilt-in email application to access your email in the same way you might using, say, Outlook Express? I find it a much more convenient way to check my mail. The only downside is that sending mail requires that you can get the correct SMTP server address... finr when you are at home, but not so easy if you are roaming. I think there are 'open access' SMPT servives that you can use for this, but I have never explored them.

If your email service is a POP account, then Steve has put you on the right track. Most ISPs have posted in their support help pages the correct settings for the POP (receiving) server and the SMTP (sending) server. Make sure you also note any information about authentication settings. If it is an HTTP/web-based mail service, then Inbox/Messaging may not help you much.

Concerning the browser issue, PIE may not have the required security to log in to the web site, or you may need a browser that supports Java. I had issues accessing a webmail site on PIE but was able to successfully log on with NetFront 3.1, which has fairly good Java support. Simply identifying PIE as IE 5.5 or 6.0 may not be enough if the underlying problem involves code on the page to which PIE cannot respond.

Do you mean Java or JavaScript?

I'm not sure which was required as the NetFront version I installed included JVLite and has support for both JavaScript and Java. I couldn't say if there are any significant differences between NetFront 3.1 and PIE for WM2003SE in the security area, but I don't think there are. Both seem to support the same standards. I have used Tweaks2k2 to spoof both as IE 6.
