I just helped a friend order an Axim X30, 624MHz, a full sized keyboard and leather case for $387, including shipping and taxes. Hard to imagine Dell makes much off of that, and they have a respectable amount of volume. A new player gets no such volume production breaks.

I don't consider 'market share' a real excuse to get out of business in a particular area of the industry. Apple computer is less than 10% in market share, yet they turn out innovative products year after year and are very profitable.

Yes, but of a much larger market. The difference is that the PDA market is quite a bit smaller.

They'll be missed.......NOT!

To paraphrase Kevin Rose from the screensavers during a laptop review "I'd be embarassed to carry around something with a JVC logo on it"

I got a JVC digital video recorder from Visa points and hated the damn thing!

hm, it looks like PDA market is going to be split between HP, Dell, p1 (but not for too long ..), and some minor players like ASUS & FuSie. I wonder when Asus or FuSie will drop out. FuSie already began to sell Asus A730 under its name so I guess FuSie is the next one out ..

btw no wonder, PDA market didn't actually grow in past 3 years ..

It’s perfectly normal for FS to badge products with low volume as their own. I’ve been thinking about buying a FS amilo A64 laptop which is a uniwill badged machine. They (fs) have done it for years.

Doesn't mean they'll drop out just somebody has a better product they can sell as their own make.

Wrong I'm afraid! Fujitsu-Siemens do not have anything ot do with a rebadged Asus a730.

Fujitsu decided to rebadge the Asus a730 as the Loox v70 but Fujitsu-Siemens (not the same company - even if strongly related!) produce their own (HTC manufactured as with the iPAQ hx4700 and Axim X50) Loox 400 and Loox 700 ranges. Far from dropping out they have been expanding their offerings. They have also been increasing market share (not to spectacular levels - but none-the-less a definite upward trend) and have a stated aim of 5% of the EMEA market.

There will be another FSC Loox release - GPRS enabled - in (probably) late H1 2005.

I would not be surprised if Fujitsu abandon PDAs - their heart has never been in it (simply rebadging Fujitsu-Siemens or Asus PDAs). FSC are committing big time to the Pocket PC however.
