I finally talked my parents into getting Vonage last week. Got the Vonage phone adapter on Thursday, and it's been working fairly well, but a few problems so far.

First of all, they sent me the Motorola ATA, even though I specifically asked a Vonage rep online which phone adapter I would get, and she said the new Linksys one. No biggie, but the Linksys one looks better.

Anyway, I orignally setup the phone adapter outside my network: Internet > Cable Modem > Vonage phone adapter > Router > network devices. However, that gave the phone adapter the Roadrunner IP, and then my Rotuer's WAN IP became 192.168.102.100. Again, that's alright, but it seemed like I could just turn off DHCP/NAT on the phone adapter, and let my router have the same Roadrunner IP address. BIG mistake. After I did that, to this day, I haven't been able to access the phone adapter's web-based config at http://192.168.102.1. Not only that, but the light on the phone adapter was blinking after I disabled DHCP/NAT on it, and as far as I could tell, the phone adapter and my router couldn't both get an IP from my cable modem at the same time (sort of makes since, but still confusing).

So what I've done since is moved the Vonage phone adapter inside my network: Internet > Cable Modem > Router > Vonage phone adapter and other network devices. I understand that can't use QoS on the phone adapter, which may or may not cause problems. Suprisingly, I've been able to make and receive phone calls fine, even without forwarding ports on my router to the phone adapter.

I still can't get to the web-based comfig for the phone adapter. My DHCP server shows that an unnamed device has address 192.168.1.20, so I'm guessing that's it, but going to http://192.168.1.20 times out.

So...any ideas? Also, which way (standard/outside network vs. alternative/inside network) do you setup your phone adapter in your network? Any other tips or tricks I should know? Are there any addon programs to do things such as see caller IDs on my computer?

My home phone number is in the process of being transfered from SBC to Vonage, so I'll be wiring the Vonage phone adapter into my home wiring once that happens. I've found the instructions for that online, but is there anything else I should know about that?

Found the solution: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic1715.html

So I guess I'll have to go through the MTA anytime I want to access the web config. I assigned an IP address reservation on my server so I can see if it is active though. Looks like the MTA even blocks ICMP pings.

Any other advice though?
