Duke Nukem Forever is apparently going to take that long to come out, but you CAN play Duke Nukem 3D on your Pocket PC while you wait. Well, kinda. As it turns out, there are a few problems, like not being able to fire and stuff. Oh, and the person who ported it doesn't have a Pocket PC. But while this sounds grim to the point of comedy, all is not as it seems! According to posts over at pocketgamer, the game CAN be played just fine using a folding keyboard, and the developer is really working hard at getting things fixed. You can download the game at mobinaute, and you can read all the gory details over at pocketgamer. <old school> Now, does anyone know if the FIRST Duke Nukem and/or Commander Keen are available for the Pocket PC?</old school> 8)

With VGA devices appearing, we need an enterprising soul to port Diablo to VGA devices (I think the original Diablo was VGA resolution)...

I don't know what's better at the moment: checking out the game and not being to fire, or simply looking at the screenshot you posted above.

Either way, the user experience is still about the same. :)

Kidding. :D Hopefully, the developmental phase of this port proves to be successful, and again show others how capable it is for Pocket PCs to run decent games. Now...if only I could work out how to get Starcraft for PPC. ;)

Same with me, oooooooooooooooh MAN if commander Keen were to be ported for PPC, I would go crazy. Duke Nukem is awesome enough, I remember the "scam" at that lycos site and how dissapointed I was that that really wasnt true, but I guess now it is! So I'm going to shut up and download this right now...

And I hope my professors weren't expecting me to pay attention in any of my classes today

Me too! I played every single Keen version with Aliens Ate my Babysitter being my favorite.

But it's great to see Duke being made available for PPC! I played that game way back when, too. I'll have to give it a try!

My fav were Keens 4 & 5: Goodbye Galaxy! But 4 was actually the best! (Secret of the Oracle)

I've still got all the Keens. :)

I'll save it for a rainy day - when Half Life 3 and Doom 4 become too demanding for my PC. ;)

Version 0.33 addresses most of the problems, and is available to download here. You'll still need the original Duke files though, more information is in the news post.

Duke Nukem, Doom II, and a number of original 3D games are already available and playing well on the Tapwave Zodiac, a Palm OS based device. I'll be pleased as anyone to see it on the PPC, but it can't possibly be all that hard to make it work if it can work on a Palm. A 400MHz Palm.

There are ports of Doom and Quake available for the PPC. You just need to Google it. :)

Did you not know you'll have to pay for those games on Palm? Doom 1 - 2 and many level packs for it are playable on P/PC and all you need is a copy of the original games then you get it for free on your PDA.. That's what porting DN3D is also about, using the original resources so you will get the exact same game but not modified version.

Last I knew those old DOS games didn't work on the PPC running PocketDOS (due to graphics restrictions), but that was awhile back, they might have a new version or the new graphics cards (like on the e800 w/ 2mb cache) might be capable..

With payment you get service, and with service you get a dedicated developer with vested interest in maintaining a positive user experience. I've seen huge numbers of freeware and open source projects be dropped and forgotten, regardless of their initial quality. While there are strong freeware and open source projects, I'm far more disposed to pay for something equivalent resting in the knowledge that it will likely work. In all my testing I've never been able to get Quake to work reasonably. On the contrary, I'm able to easily watch TV shows on my Tungsten T3 or Axim X30 using commerial products.

regas: Unfortunately, the Doom and DN ports on the Zodiac are a disgrace. Any old timers around, does the name Machineworks Northwest ring a bell? The Doom port isn't full resolution - just scaled up, and the analog stick can nly go either foward, or left - you can't use both directions. And forget about WAD support.

Duke Nukem on the other hand is a new game, and there have been reports of the 30 levels being beaten in one sitting under an hour.

Anyway, gfDoom and PocketQuake are your best (and only) chances for these games on the PPC. gfDoom just blows every other (half-ased) Doom port ouf of the water.

As for the almighty Keen, no source, plus it's a relic DOS app :\ I've been wanting to do a tile-based run and jump platformer for a while, but I can't program, and all that jazz.

Has anybody actually gotten this to work with a pocket pc and a folding keyboard? I'm trying now, but it just doesn't seem to want to be responsive enough with my X3 and its foldable keyboard.

Ah, This reminds me of all those sleepless nights playing duke nukem .. missing several classes in the morning, due to problems in keeping my eyes open .... The good old days. :D

So, no folding keyboard = no play ?
