http://k-tai.impress.co.jp/cda/arti...vent/20352.html

This article (somewhat humorous English translation here) suggests the e830 is already available for sale in Japan (or will be soon, depending on how you interpret the translation). The spec page, featuring a GENiO e product (the Japanese branding for Toshiba PDAs) shows WLAN and Bluetooth bundled in, along with a 520MHz XScale processor, 128MB of RAM and WM2003SE.

The unit looks almost identical to the e805. So, now all we have to do is wait and hope for international release(s)... 8)

Not yet available in stores ;)

And even not on the Japan Toshiba's web site. The PDA Solution Fair as they call it, is just here in order to show future models. But yes this Toshiba may come in Japan one day or another ;)

There should be some fierce competition now! :)

Asus, Dell, Toshiba, and HP all have high-end devices to woo the PPC buff, each one having enough drool factor to lure them in.

Ok...I am going to play devils advocate :devilboy:
All the hype over VGA.....look at the size of those cells.....too damn small to read almost.

So what is the real benefit (esp. to the average user .....Contacts...Calender...) of VGA on such a small screen?

Presently slipping into flame retardant PJ's

Hell ya.....I didn't mean you guys....gheesh :wink:No, my point was that the average user won't get this Pocket PC (well any PPC)...make that the average PPC user won't get a VGA PPC any time soon. If you're interested, chances are you're not the "average" user.

Trust me - the VGA screen makes things dramatically crisper. Text can be smaller and MUCH easier to read. Even if you use the same font size on the VGA screen as you did on a QVGA screen, the text is so much crisper that its like reading printed paper.

The average pocketpc buyer will get the pocketpc we tell them to !! <cue maniacal laughter>

Seriously though, most people who dont know will look for advice from the local guru before buying. If they have the funds, I would advise stepping up to the "better" models, instead of last years technology.

I have to say, up until now, I haven't been able to find the e80x series for sale on Toshiba's website here in Japan. I don't live in Tokyo so I can't get a daily lookings on what's on sale in the retail channels and maybe I haven't been looking hard enough, but if this is true, then it will be the first chance for me to *potentialy* get a VGA PocketPC here in Japan. Yum!

Really? Hmmm....I would have thought a technologically advanced country like Japan would be on the board with the latest generation of Pocket PC devices. :?

Nope, Toshiba never released the e800/805 in Japan and instead opted to extend and expand on their regular 4inch Genio line with QVGA screens up until now.

Whats weird is that they did launch the e400/405 as a lower end Genio there but never the 800/805

Hmmm...the wonders of variability in devices within each country. 8) Actually, does anyone know why HP labels the devices they ship in Australia with a 0 at the end, but in the US, they have a 5 instead? For example: iPAQ h1940/h1945; h2210/h2215, etc.

Is it all in the software set included with the device? You know, my h1940 was meant to come with Resco Picture Viewer back in the day when I first bought my device. I never got it. 8)

WEll the screen look great and everything but this is a brick in your pocket. the thing looks like is going to make a hole in you pocket or unbluckel your belt if u get a belt clip.

I'd go for VGA over brick! And besides, it's not that bricky. :)

I'm still undecided if I should get a VGA device or a QVGA PPCPE.

PPCPE I would really like to carry just one device but am not sure if this would be a good idea because of stability... Is the OS stable enough to replace a mobile only device? or should I wait for PPC PE 2004/2005???

VGA on the other hand seems to be too pricey for what it offers. It isn't really a must have feature for me, but then again I haven't seen a VGA screen up close.

Some Questions (Forgive my ignorance):

Are there enough VGA optimized apps to make using VGA worthwhile (I mean why get VGA if all the apps are designed for QVGA, wouldn't this negate VGA)?

Is a VGA PPC PE too much to hope for as of now?

I guess until VGA devices are more readily available to play around with, it'll be very hard to convince people about the benefit. If u know ur gonna have to keep it for more than a year, then VGA is a must.

Best example of VGA-friendly app is Terminal Services client, if you do a lot of remote server maintenance, then VGA rocks :D
You get the whole 640x480 screen in your Pocket PC :D

I read earlier that you said you had never seen a VGA device up close. And you're probably wondering what all the "hype" is about? When I was in your position, I was sitting here in front of a computer screen reading about everyone drooling over a VGA screen. Until I checked it out for myself. That's when I became one of the droolers.

IMHO, a VGA screen offers so many benefits and improvements in clarity. Think of it as less scrolling. View webpages in a more comfortable manner. Create and edit Word and Excel files without scrolling every 2 seconds. The possibilities are endless. The benefits are not just limited to Terminal Services Client. If you really do not need a VGA device, you'll save a bundle of money by opting for the QVGA devices. However, check out a VGA device for yourself if you have the time, as the choice between a QVGA and VGA is purely up to you.

Rock solid advice thanks... Just in case though I am saving up already for VGA (of course a PPC PE Will be cheaper than a VGA device, right? or should I be saving for the other way around???) :devilboy:

Unfortunately, it appears so -- either because of battery consumption or size. :(

There's no one good answer as to the way to go -- it more depends on your workflow than anything.
