So, I just happened to notice that the vendors in Disney World use a Palm based POS system...

What is this (and that) world coming to???

From the looks of these they look to be wireless, do most or any of the parks have public WiFi? We are headed there next month and are trying to prepare.

It's a point of sale system. It has to do ONE thing. Palm does one thing at a time well ;)

Hey maybe they said they wanted a Point Of Sale (POS), and the buyers looked it up and found Palm Operating System (POS), not realizing that POS also stands for .... just kidding

Do wireless credit card machines use WiFi? I thought it was a different type of connection more resembling cellular communication. Wifi might not be secure enough.

I saw one of those earlier today. I went to my college's financial aid office, and the local delivery (she wore a blue hat, white shirt, and yellow pants.. certainly not UPS or FedEx) person was there dropping off some packages, and I saw her put that thing on the counter. I went "Neat" then went back to playing Bejewelled waiting patiently.

I have two of those....( ducking 8O )..... we used those at my last job then they found out that it really was a POS and let use keep them. Both of mine have been sitting in my closet ever since. The strange thing is that I've had mine since 2001 and when you open it up there's a pcmcia slot inside for a wireless card. The DMV here also use the same ones. They have a version that is ppc, i'd much rather that than some ole POS.....

We use DHL at my work, and our delivery guy wears a bright yellow shirt and red hat, and doesn't use a PalmOS device. Oh well :?

Sorry but this one-liner just screams to be said...

"What do you expect for such a Mickey Mouse Operation?"

I will now slink back into the hole I slid from...

Too bad they couldn't have used the Disney Dream Pocket PC:

Well, if it makes you feel better Steve, Symbol have not produced a new Palm device for a couple of years and have effectivly gone to WM and win CE totally.

They actually have some cool wireless PPCs due out soon to compete with the Ipaqs. Less industrial and lower cost than the traditional Symbol products.

No, but there are APs all over the parks. I was just there two months ago and I used WiFiFoFum (http://www.wififofum.org) to monitor the networks in the area. The screen was filled with networks, most of which weren't even broadcasting an ID. Needless to say, I couldn't get on a single one of them.
